ABC World News States LCCs Equal More Delays

Fri May 27, 2005 8:57 am

http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/Travel/story?id=794847&page=1

The biggest problems, according to the DOT, are expected at Atlanta; Philadelphia; New York's LaGuardia; Newark, N.J.; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and Washington's Dulles Airport.

Low-cost air carriers are one key reason for the delays. The companies, which add flights and lower fares, are encouraging more people to fly.

To remain competitive [to DH], United Airlines increased flights at Dulles and lowered its fares. Overall, according to the DOT, delays at Dulles have now increased more than 100 percent.

All i have to say is SLOW NEWS DAY

outrageously ridiculous comments here.... why blame the LCC just because they encourage more peopleto fly? why not blame themselves for the lack of airport infrastructure?

Don't blame the airlines for serving the airports, thats just stupid. Blame the airports for not being able to keep up to pace with demand.

Just look at DEN, the only delays there come from very heavy weather, and even then a delay at DEN is equivalent of an ORD shutdown. And we have a huge LCC presence here.

Ask anyone at Airtran, and they will tell you that Delta's complexes are a significant reason for delays at ATL, even with the "smoothing" of the schedule, which actually just made it harder for Airtran to design its schedule around times when DL wouldn't be hogging the runways. Gee, when Eastern and Delta both operated at ATL (both traditional carriers) would anyone have attributed the delays to LCCs? Again with the morons in the network news divisions. More likely, someone at a major carrier told some idiot reporter this "on background", and they reported it. Just shoot me.

Why is this scenario entirely the LCCs fault? What about the ($&**& FAA/ATC system??? They're THE single most egregious failure in the nation causing most of the delays.

there was an article just yesterday in the wall street journal if i'm not mistaken on the delays at major airports due to the growing fleet of several of the fractional ownership programs as well (options, net jets, flex jet, citation shares, etc)

And then the other story out today...

Somehow the airlines have told the new agencies that this summer expect to see more delayed flights because, unlike last year, the carriers have decided to operate them instead of canceling and rerouting.

Why you ask. Simple. The load factors are so high on all flights that rerouting is near impossible. So, you have companies flying at over 90% and still not making money still paying for mis-conex and RONs and possibly overtime to work the lates.

So you could say that if it wasn't for the LCCs forcing prices down so low that load factors are too high to allow cancellations. Hmmmm. Actually that does make sense. But its just part of the spiral down of the whole industry.

Can you really blame the airports? It would seem you can only get so big before delays are inevitable. At what point does putting more money in an airport get you no real return? I'd like to see some people from air traffic control chime in on this. At what point are you better off just opening a 2nd airport?

What it comes down to is bad planning on the part of city officials/airport management.

we need more airports and more direct flights.

also could be explained by LCC:

LCC draws more people to airports.
wealthy people don't like crowds
more people mean long lines at security
wealthy people hate lines, get angry when forced to wait
more flights cause delays
wealthy people don't like delays
legacy carriers cut services, decrease premium seating
wealthy people don't like being treated like cattle
private jets have gotten larger, more comfortable, and more affordable
for even small groups, for wealthy people it becomes a wash
airlines adhere to a schedules
wealthy people set their own schedules.

add it all up, and this not only increases GA, but also hurts legacy carriers who have trouble booking those higher fare seats.
Of all the things to worry about... the Wookie has no pants.

And that explains delays in the past, ie Summer from Hell, how? What about airports w/ limited LCC service (ORD)? Are we to assume that the problems that plague PHL stem from the "recent" addition of WN?

Wealthy people also like the profits that WN, B6, etc turn so they cannot complain too much. Also, how does this logic of decreasing premium seating stack up with YX having a crap load of premium seating and a crap load of problems? By your logic, if the wealthy people want a premium seat, YX would be very profitable? Maybe the US doesn't have that many wealthy people? scratchchin  stirthepot And while the prices of biz-jets and charter companies may have dropped, but nuts to paying 1,500 per flt hr, I want to see numbers that show an increase in premium biz-jet traffic that cripples GA! And don't get me started on those "elite" check-in and security lines...

Going off what I've said eariler, if a handful of fractional-ownership flights can cripple ORD, ATL, etc. then there's a larger problem...
