Me, On The Tarmac At Chicago's O'Hare!

Fri May 27, 2005 12:25 pm

My new job required a trip across the service roads, including the one running down the middle of the airport and across several taxi-ways.

This was an awesome experience. UA, Air Canada, LH, AA, KLM, JAL (2 747s, one taxiing in and one taxiing out, 777s from BA, China Eastern Cargo MD-11 (at least I think I was winglets and all the baby jets everywhere. 767s, 757s, A-320 and -319, 777s, 747s. Just about name it and I saw it. This was one of the greatest experiences. Can't wait for duty to call again. Oh and of course the DHL and Airborne DC-8s.

Over by the old cargo terminal (where the new international terminal will be) there was a CAT 727 and an unmarked (except for "CS-TLO" and "ETOPS") 767-300.

Guess I do not have a question, just wanted to tell and maybe rub it in a bit!

Being on the ramp of a commercial airport is fun.

What do you do?
And all at once the crowd begins to sing: Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same

Since when are there multiple BA 777s on the ground with 2 JAL 744s and the Chine Eastern M11F at the same time?

I doubt youve seen everything. Have you seen the RJ A342 or the China Southern 744F along with the PrivatAir A319 (Although that isnt hard to spot at T1/3 anyways  Silly)

Only one BA 777, but there were 2 JAL pax 747-400s, one taxiing out, one taxiing in, I was surprised too.

I know how you feel....
I got a job at an FBO on Boeing Field in Seattle. Although it does not service any major airlines, there is still allot of very interesting airplanes that visit.
Were else can one see the 737 Wedgetail, 777-200LR, multiple 737's waiting to be delivered, a Concorde (although not flying), Paul Allen's 757s, and much more all in one location?

We also have the DHL 767s, ABX DC-9, UPS 757 and 767, the everyday Citation X, G-IV/V, Challenger, ect.
Proud to be an A&P!!!

Interesting - CS-TLO is a Euro-Atlantic 767-300 that has been on lease to Etihad Airways in AUH. I wonder if this was being used by the Amiri flight, which is occasionally the case with EY's 763's....

UK Dispatcher,

CS-TLO is apparently on a charter for Vodaphone of Portugal? In town for a Microsoft conference of some sorts from what a local out there mentioned.

the United Airlines employee lot @ ORD requires that employees drive over an *active* taxiway to get there.... its amazing giving a 777 a right of way and watching that huge bird drive past ya :P

I'm really surprised at that comment coming from you! I'm thinking from past threads that you spend some time at ORD, and it is a common thing to have two or three BA 777's or two BA 777's and a BA744 on the field at the same time. JAL is running two 744's into ORD right now. China Eastern's MD-11 is a daily occurance, IIRC.

ChiGB1973 - Congrats on your gig. I'm very jealous. Give us some updates with your experiences. I'd really like to hear more.

I can't get back there anymore... no longer w/ UAX!

Although now that I think about it, I think I yielded to more American Eagle ATRs than United 777s... if my memory serves me correctly, as you turn LEFT to head towards that taxiway and UAL lot, there is an Eagle mx facility right there...

The only point I was trying to make is ive never seen 2 BA 777s at the same time as ive seen 2 JAL 777s and the China Eastern M11, Look at their arrival and departure times.

My guess he works for Deutsche Post (DHL)

And yes, I realize that in the summer JAL runs a 2nd 744, and BA runs 744s to LHR while the LHR-ORD-IAH run is with a 777.

Oh ok, thanks. That's awesome. I use DHL all the time! They just came to pick up an overnight envelope a couple hours ago.  Smile

Took this while I was working at SJC:

When I was working at SJC, I was often required to drive a good length of the access road to fuel ground equipment or when running freight back and forth from the terminal to the freight house. There is nothing cooler than driving along with a jet screaming past you on takeoff just a few hundred feet away. Just like that scene out of Top Gun.

Driving on the access road is definitely a neat, and often fun experience. But it can also be VERY stressfull. So much to watch out for... When I first started here at SAN, driving on the ramp was so much more stressful than SJC because of the terminal lay-out. I've had a couple 737s flash their "high-beams" at me to get me to moooooooooooooooooooooove. Haha.
