DFW DAL Spotting

Fri May 27, 2005 1:14 pm

where is a good place to spot at DFW or DAL, im tired of ads, there is not alot of big planes that fly there
If Continental had a hub at DFW with nonstop flights I would always fly them, unfortunantely good things take time.

At DFW there is Founder's Plaza.

The only down side to Founder's Plaza is you'll become sick of MD-80's after an hour or so. Since it sits just off the end of two runways, you do get good views of aircraft taking off or landing. There is also a taxiway which runs next to Founder's Plaza. It leads from Runway 17L although some days the runway seems almost totally inactive with only a few aircraft going by while other days aircraft go by regularly. The only downside is it seems like on a lot of days many of the international flights land and takeoff on the other side of the airport.

Also, about Founder's Plaza, it might take some maneuvering to get there, as it is only accessible, without going through the airport tolls, from the southern entrance way. As of early Sunday morning, the main southern access highway, 183, was shut down to only one lane each way due to a massive tanker/pick up truck collision/explosion that should take weeks to clean up and repair the damage to the surrounding roadways.

yeah founder's plaza is probably the best place to spot at DFW. There's really nothing to see at DAL except for Southwest 737's.

Sometimes I used to sit at Founder's Plaza for a while then go to the west side of the airport and take a look at the new international terminal and see what cargo planes are there. Go to flytecomm.com and check out the flight schedules and maybe you can catch some good cargo flights coming in from europe and/or asia. Good luck.

On the west side, there is the Cargo parking lot (right next to Lufthansa and Singapore Cargo). Follow airfield drive west, and look for the international cargo center. I haven't been there in a good while, I hear there is some construction about to take place that will give this spot the axe soon. Not sure though... its been a good spot so far.

At DAL, the parking garage is good in the morning, and bachman lake is decent too when they are landing from on the 13's.

Happy spotting!

Just beware of the LH Cargo area. Don't get out of your car and hang out, you need to stay in your car and only get out to spot; otherwise, the po-po will come kick you out if the people at LH spot you.
Also, supposedly Founder's is best on a North flow, which being June in Texas (almost...), the likelihood of getting a North wind is very low.

As Senorcarnival said, Founder's Plaza is best on a north flow day, which are rare in summer. However, if you can get out there now there is a good north flow today  Smile At DAL there is Bachman Lake and that's really about it. Shoot me an email and I might be able to help you out some at DAL. As for interesting planes coming in here, the AirborneExpress 762 comes in about 1500 M-F and leaves just after 2200. All the WN planes come through here all the time, there'll be some BBJs, some A319 business jets, and, occasionally, you'll get to see a 747 come in for paint or interior refurbishing. Happened a month or so ago here and scared the crap out of me! Just sitting around working, heard a loud noise, looked out the window and all I could see was the fuselage of the Saudi 747! Quite a day! Depending on how large a lens you have, you can catch the WN planes on approach from the White Rock Lake area. We also often have the LH 340 and BA 777 fly over White Rock on their way to Europe.

Everytime the Saudi royalty visits the president at his Ranch, there are a bunch of exotic heavies. I think there were 2 747s, a 777, an A340, and a 767-200 of Aramco, just last month (all in one weekend!!).

There was also a 744 of Kingdom Holdings that was being interior fitted by Associated. Not sure if its still there or gone. The 747SP of the Saudi Royal fleet has also been a spotted visitor on occoasion.

John Travolta's 707, and the Global Ambassadors 747SP are among some of the really unique and interesting visitors at DAL over the recent past.

Can anyone please identifiy why there is a 747 @ DAL(LOVE FIELD) AIRPORT. I saw it as I flew on southwest airlines today from there. It looks like its next to FRONTIER MUSEUM OF FLIGHT MUSEUM, on the south side of airport in a hanger, tail of plane sticking out of hanger. Looks like some kind of SAUDI plane. anyways, thanks, if anyone can tell me what series of 747 it is, and name of owner. CHEERS.
