seems to me that its going to be a succes because:

-Cochin city will expand with hotels etc
-Indian aviation is really growing at the moment

succes to them

The new Cochin airport is really nice. It got alot of private investments from people who are from Cochin that now live abroad.

It's great to see the Indian aviation industry becoming the way it is but you have to wonder just how much the airports can handle all these new airlines. Some domestic airport terminals seem like there smaller than some homes you see in India. I swear everytime I get a flight at the private domestic terminal at DEL I feel like sometimes I'm in a home than a airport terminal.

Can't wait until the new Hyderabad and Bangalore airports are built.

I feel this is the wrong time. Too many entrants and too few pilots. Wait for the dust to settle and take a fresh look.

The chief minister of Kerala had been proposing an airline for Kerala for a while. This may be the result.

It will probably take some time for the airline to become established which is why it plans to start domestic operations initially. Whether or not it is going to be successful remains to be seen but I think there is enough potential considering the increasing number of passengers who use Cochin Airport year by year. I'm sure this venture can succeed if it is managed well.

CIAL a great example of how private enterprise can actually succeed in Kerala which is well known for labour problems.

There is a chance, because none of the new LCC are coming to Kerala. Also very few private carriers come to Kerala compared to the northern states. I believe only Jet comes to TRV.

Hope our guys won't screw up things.

Was in COK June of 04, nice airport. Cochin has gotten really nice. Stayed at LeMeridian, where alot of the airline crew's stay.

I think this is a pretty hare-brained idea. V.J Kurian should attempt to get more flights to the airport rather then trying to set up an airline. From all the statistics I have seen, running an airport anywhere in the world is comparitively more profitable than running an airline. CIAL turned in a neat profit last year, and they should continue expanding the airport. It would be good to land in an airport in India where domestic and international services are all jetway-based.

They should attempt to get atleast a couple of European carriers and the bigger South East Asian carriers to fly into Cochin (for eg replace Silk Air with mailine SQ).

On another matter, apparently the landing charges at Cochin are significantly higher than at other airports, which is why Air Deccan doesn't want to fly into Cochin. On Kingfisher's proposed route-map, Cochin isn't even identified as a proposed destination.

Right on - Dont get carried away by the idea of the huge pax traffic in the Kerala airports. They are all skwed heavily in favor of the international side. Cochin - Yes they have a reasonable amount of of domestic traffic - but TRV and CCJ are no gos.

Jet actually dropped the TRV MAA route- they downgraded it from a 737 to a ATR and still had to drop it. Same goes for CCJ, where Jet's second frequency to BOM was dropped after the Konkan Railway came on stream as well as more international flights started from the city.

Correct point. Kerala offers mainly Intl. traffic(gulf), so Chandy will have to amend the Rules before launching the Airline. It is no use to fly domestic.
Politicians can do it and I hope to see the airline going international, eventhough it seems private , the CM of Kerala is the Chairman.

JET flies COK-MAA with an ATR, anohter orute that could use more capacity. Both IC and AI fly the route on various days as tag alongs to Gulf flights, but no well timed daily jet service exists.

Oh and don't forget another hare brained idea about creating a new airport in Kannur (Cannanore). Apparently the new joke is that when 2 malayalis join up, they no longer form a union, they agitate for an airport!! Maybe AI can use their new 787's to start a new PHL-Kottayam service for all the chechis' working as nurses in the City of Brotherly Love.

That is a route which has been killed off by Indian Airlines . They started thesee tag along flights - but dropped fares heavily - on the COK-MAA sector. Also only on the ACO-MAA sector you have inconvenient timings not the other way round. I was at MAA international terminal for the flight to HYD recently (which goes to Dubai) and there was another flight going COK-MCT. The flight was something like 90% full of COK pax. Jet had to downgrade the route as well to ATR.

Everything that is not solely managed by the Airports Authority of India is deemed to be successful. My last week trip DEL-BHO (early morning) made me literally sick.. DEL Airport is starting to compete with BOM for the worlds most annoying terminal

With lower prices for domestic flights, the number of passengers for domestic flights will only increase. In a country as large as India I see huge potential for low cost carriers.

All this calls for a merger between AI and IC to coordinate their gulf operations inter alia..  sleepy
