New Thai Airways Service To JNB...

Fri May 27, 2005 11:45 pm

Thai national carrier, Thai Airways will begin a 3x weekly MD-11 service from the Thai capital Bangkok to the South African city of Johannesberg.

The servcice is expected to start in December of this year and will be codeshared with SAA!

Why did SAA quit BKK, I loved seeing their 747 classics at BKK!

Will the MD-11's receive the new cabins?

I thought Thai was no longer operating the MD-11....

But good to see new services starting.

TG has announced these JNB services on many an occasion. The last time, I believe, was last year when they announced daily services with B744s after the acquisition of a couple of ex-UA airframes. We all know what happened to that project, and so, although the airline seems to be more committed to actually starting the operation, I will believe it when I see it.

I hope they're planning to so something on the MD11's interior before starting this service, though, because the state of these planes' fittings is abyssmal to say the very least. It was ok for a 3-hour CGK-BKK flight a couple of months ago, but I wouldn't wanna be stuck in there for a BKK-JNB overnight longhaul. However, I don't believe there's any plans to upgrade the MD11s, and if there were such projects planned, given the way things go at TG, very little would probable come of it. The refurbishment of the B744s and B777s interiors must by now be 2 years behind schedule...

Yep, TG still operate 4 MD11's.
we get 5 services pw to MEL, and having travelled in the aircraft, I can confirm they are very ordinary.

funnily enough the BKK-MEL sector is overnight!
BKK 00.15
MEL 12.05

far from ideal...

I would love to have the opportunity to fly the MD-11. For me it's one of those birds I just gotta get on. KLM flies them to CAI (4h 30min flight) so I might do that. It's enough time to get a good feeling of the plane.

Hi all,

It still amazes me that this route used to sustain a double daily. One operation by Varig to BKK from GIG/GRU via JNB and one SA Service in codeshare with TG, and now the best TG can offer is 4x per week.

I will obviously never understand why SA dropped this route. That flight was ALWAYS full.

Oh well.

MH operates KUL-JNB, flying time is 10h 35m and JNB-KUL is 10hrs so I image flight times will be similar from BKK!

Can anyone confirm wether the MD-11's will feature the new cabins?

Oh, didn't Cathay threaten to cancel its codeshare with SAA if the South African carrier opt to cooperate with a Star airline, something that we are certain is happening sooner or later.

Guess that's it for the CX/SA partnership...

To me recollection TG codeshared with SA on the BKK route. Anyway, SA currently codeshares with CX and QF, as well as a bunch of other Star carriers like BD, LH, RG and SK.

SAA has not been flying to BKK for quite a while already. Now passengers have to connect their flights in HKG with CX.

haha, my mistake, I was meant to say a Star airline in Asia. My impression was Cathay is quite weary of SA hooking up with SQ... :p

TG has changed their equipment on BKK-BNE to 777 I think.

I have been on Thai's MD11... business class seats are old and IFE is terrible.

Business Class seats are the same as on the B747-300/400. Pitch is 34" in economy class. First Class seats great. TG is not known to have a great IFE whatever aircraft you are flying.
Correct, B773 flies BKK-BNE Smile

I'm quite aware of that mate. Note that I used the word "codeshared" in reply 10. No worries.

Don't forget that alot has changed since RG served the sector. EK and QR have grown substantially, and now have multiple services a day from JNB-BKK via DXB/DOH

Nope/ I think te MD's will be phased out in the next 2 years, and converted to freighters. therefore no new cabins.

Correct. B773 4pw, 1 terminator, and 3 that go on to AKL.
