HP/US To Fly PHX-HNL/OGG/LIH/KOA, SAN/LAS-HNL?

Sat May 28, 2005 12:56 am

There's an interesting route map in one of US's filings with the bankruptcy court, available at http://www.donlinrecano.net/dr201/mwc/04-13819/dk002160-0000.pdf.

It's labeled "When combined with US Airways, the operations of the two carriers would
create a nationwide low-cost carrier with a route structure as follows:
"

http://www.projectbarbell.com/images/routemap.new.jpg

It shows lines representing PHX-HNL/OGG/LIH/KOA and SAN/LAS-HNL. Now, admittedly, a good portion of the rest of the map is wrong. But it's interesting nonetheless.

If those are "present" lines - they could represent the codeshare with Hawaiian Airlines .. would be great if the new carrier does start service to Hawaii. Tho I'd think it would be out of PHX and/or LAS only .. I can't see them getting into the West Coast-Hawaii market ..

That is probably not supposed to be available to the public.

I would agree that it's showing the code-share with HA!!

I guess the 757 could make those routes feasable. More single aisle planes on long flights. GGGRRREEAATTTT!!!

This map is very obscure. Half of America West Airlines routes are not listed, and the codes listed are two digit versus a standard three digit city code. In addition HNL/OGG/LIH/KOA may be shown as connecting options using America West Airlines codeshare with Hawaiian Airlines ala Honolul . They same for San Diego and Los Angeles and their connections from America West/America West Express. That or someone has an inside track to what the new airline is planning as far as reductions!

There is a line that goes from PHX to the lovely ocean somewhere between HNL and LIH.

It's a court filing in an open bankruptcy case. By its very nature, it is available to the public.

This map is accurate and does not reflect a code share with HA...AWA is/was planning to go to various Hawaiian Islands beginning late this year or early next and now it will be as US Airways.

If this HP/US airline going to add all those flights to Hawaii, will they have enough capital to acquire to either lease or buy ETOPS-rated jets to add to their fleet right away? The only ETOPS they have are used on the US flights to/from Europe. Not sure if any of HP's 752s are ETOPS. In any case will the bankruptcy court allow this airline merger rapid expansion before it exits? They will have to also create an infrastructure at whichever airport they begin with. If they expand too fast, they might implode, and have a mega-collapse. Look back to the 80s, and what happened back then.

If they were smart (or at least wise), stick with the HA code-share.

Our regional manger came to see us yesterday and stated there is a new route map that shows our new Hawaii markets. This one is not it however, we have an official HP one floating around somewhere. Service is set to begin at the end of the year...either way, it will happen, merger or not.

AWA already has "3" ETOPS certified 757's ready to go but they will need more than that by early next year. US Airways has plenty of 757's but not sure if they are ETOPS certified (the 767's they have are as they presently fly to Europe). AWA can spend money to upgrade the 757's to ETOPS but the jury is still out on that decision. At any rate it is going to happen...merger or not.

I know that TZ is working hard to establish a stronger presence on the PHX-HNL and OGG flights. They also jumped at the opportunity to start LAS-HNL, competing with only HA for that route.
Don't be surprised if you see TZ adding frequency to theses routes as the US/HP merger gets closer to completion.

Not true. They also compete with Vacations Hawaii's chartered DC-10 flights operated by Omni. Air/hotel packages are a popular method of taking a Las Vegas vacation for many Hawaii residents.

If HA doesn't get it together with an AM PHX-OGG flight, US will serve that first. There goes the codeshare.

Are not the US's A321 now ETOPS with extra fuel tanks aft???

Still would like to know how many of US's 31 752s are ETOPS?

Please let me know.

US Airways has plenty of 757's but not sure if they are ETOPS certified (the 767's they have are as they presently fly to Europe).

None of US's 757s (or A32X) are ETOPS, though most of the 757s, some of the A319s, and all of the A320s are EOW for Caribbean operations.

I'm not even convinced that US could fly the 767 to Hawaii right now. US had a few problems this past year (one engine shutdown too many) and had ETOPS 180 taken away for a while, so they were operating the Europe flights under ETOPS 138. I'm not sure if they're back to ETOPS 180 or not.
