UA Halfway To Hawaii Game

Mon May 30, 2005 9:18 pm

Any previous winners out there?

For those of you who are not familiar, UA plays a game on it's west coast departures whereby you are supposed to guess the exact time the aircraft reaches the geographical halfway point of the journey. The winner receives a bottle of champagne or a gift certificate or some other token.

Last year on my SFO-HNL flight I WON, and I used my Garmin eTrex Vista handheld GPS to help me. Do you consider that cheating?

Cheating? NO !
- Were you allowed to operate such a device during cruise ?
- How did it work inside an a/c cabin ? AFAIK GPS-devices need "visual" contact to a number of satellites ...

I beleive GPS units are supposed to be off limits during flight. Lucky the flight crew didnt see it.

Not technically cheating, but hardly "sporting." I've managed to win a couple using nothing more than a pen and cocktail napkin.

In the US the FAA permits the use of a "class B digital device" onboard airplanes. I found it helpful to bring the owners manual along onboard in case the flight crew is "suspicious." On one occassion a pilot questioned my use of the device but allowed it after I showed him the owners manual.

My GPS onlys works when I hold it close to the airplane window, and even then I sometimes have trouble receiving a strong enough signal.

That´s what I suspected. The low signal strength is probably to the fact that you can "see" only those satellites on one side of the a/c.

Won it once back in '97. Had to do it manually using a pen and cocktail napkin. Didn't have any electronics to help. man it was a long time since I had to do long division!

i remember doing that last time i flew UA. but the sad thing was i was only a couple minutes off. like others...had to use pen and paper and put my schooling to the test *LOL*. unfortunatly if i did win...they'd have to offer me something other than champange cause i was under 21 Sad hope to one of these days try my luck at it again!

I won on an ORD/HNL trip in the late 80's. We were going as part of a family reunion and my Mom and I were seated in the upper deck on a 747. They played the contest and my guess was 2:17 PM. Mom wrote down 2:13, I told her to change it to something later so we'd have a better chance to win. She did, and the actual time was 2:13!! I was closest but Mom actually would have hit it on the nose if I didn't make her change her guess.

Burnsie28, GPS units ARE allowed during flight- I asked a GST trainer the question myself... I bring my own when I do ANC trips for the layover hikes!!

BTW- I don't know if it was cheating, but maybe not 100% fair!!!

I was as close as any f/a on my DC-10 flight had ever seen without winning. I was short by one minute and one second.

No consolation prize, let me tell you - I still love United, though!!
