Latin America Tops World's Air Traffic Growth

Mon May 30, 2005 11:10 pm

IATA data regarding world air traffic from Jan to April/05 show the following regional growth:

January -April 2005 YTD (year to date)

RPK Growth / ASK Growth / Pax Load Factor %

Africa 11.8 % / 7.5 % / 70.0
Asia/Pacific 8.2 % / 7.4 % / 72.1
Europe 6.0 % / 5.1 % / 73.8
Middle East 13.6 % / 12.2 % / 72.6
North America 11.5 % / 10.0 % / 77.6
Latin America 13.7 % / 13.1 % / 72.7
World 8.7 % / 7.6 % / 73.6

Latin America tops the list, followed by the Middle East, both showing strong air traffic growth. European air traffic shows under-average growth.

Latin America Tops World's Air Traffic Growth

Tue May 31, 2005 2:05 am

Just in Mexico, the Mexican Transportation Bureau shows that passengers transported went up in from 2002 to 2003 ( no 2004 still available) 5.5% acording to the anual growth rate.

Passengers transportated within in the domestic airlines:

2002: 24,051 thousands of passengers
2003: 24,846 thousands of passengers

Passengers transportated by the international airlines:

2002: 13,205 thousands of passengers
2003: 14,430 thousands of passengers

Being the US the primary destination with a major flow of passengers between this two countries ( AA and CO takind the lead).

As the major European carrier being LH, followed by IB, AF, and KL.

Varig :98,000 passengers in 2002, to 113,000 passengers in 2003.

Taca: 45,000 to 50,000 passengers

Copa:110,000 to 140,000 passengers

LAB: 36,000 to 58,000

LAN: 88,000 to 92,000

Cubana: 135,000 to 117,000 ( a decrease in passengers)

Avianca: 45,000 to 49,000

No Aerolíneas Argentinas of course.

Some interesting data here, I was kind of surprised with some of the numbers. Anyway, this is the growth Mexico has been having since 2002. Let's wait and see for the growth in 2004, must have bigger numbers I guess. How about airlines at your countries?

Cheers

Alonso, thanks for the numbers. Impressive to see RG's growth in Mexico! (second only to CM in total pax).

In the whole of Latin America air traffic has been growing fast, and different from predictions, faster than Asia and any other regions. It shows that Latin America is a the main market airlines should invest for future operations. In fact, it is because of the Latin American market, that US carriers have been able to keep some of their operations profitable balancing loss making routes.

Well LB flies to MEX 5X a week while AV do it only 4X. If wrong, please SouthA help me on this one!

They also frequently send B763s while AV more recently, at least, 03/04 has been a B752 operation.

Yes. LB operates VVI-MEX nonstop on Tuesdays and Saturday on 763.

Quoting Ghost77 (Reply 8):

Correct Ricardo. AV offers 11 weekly flights to MEX, but only 4 of them are operated by the airline itself, the other 7, as you know, are operated by partner company Mexicana.

LB is operating 5 weekly flights to Mexico City, and will continue so at least during the whole summer.

2 of those flights are served nonstop to/from VVI, and the other 3 operate through PTY on 727-200.

Making quick calculations, the seat offer of LB compared to that of AV is very similar [approximately 700 weekly seats each airline]. It would be nice to have further details.

Anyone knows the frecuencies of AV of 2002 and 2003?

No surprise there - good to see the region recovering.

For your info, those IATA figures will be made up of figures for South America only - not Central America (it will not include the Mexican carriers' figures), so the term Latin america for the figures is slightly misleading. having said that, the current trend is similar in Central america too.

The carriers included in those figures are LAN, Aerolineas, Varig, LAB and possibly TAM and Avianca - it will be for their international traffic only.

CUN receives 10 million passengers a year. GDL and MTY just over 7 million yearly. I got these numbers from a thread on airliners.

According to Aeropuertos Argentina 2000, the operator of almost all airports in Argentina, here are the numbers for 2003 (they still don't show the 2004 numbers on their website):

EZE 4.450.177
AEP 4.161.280

So, EZE is slightly bigger than AEP on pax volume, mainly due to AR flying some domestic routes from EZE for connecting pax. I'd be interesting on seeing the 2004 numbers, as in 2004 there was an important increase on airlines flying to Argentina.

So, finally I found the 2004 numbers for Argentine airports.

AEP 5.245.923
EZE 5.565.656

Total BUE: 10.811.579 pax.

Still, EZE is bigger than AEP pax wise.

Confirming the report that Latin American aviation market is the fastest growing market in the world, the Brazilian Airport Auhtority released data for Jan-April/05:

Market Growth: 19.53% in pax traffic for Jan-April/05
Total of 30.1 million pax (compared 25.4 million for the same period in 2004)
577,000 take-offs and landings operated

Don't take it too hard, lots of respect for the growth and I heared great things about LAN, TAM and many other airlines, but to get things in perspective, the Latin market (30 million) is like more then 10 times as small as the asian, European and US market, so a double digit market growth has to be seen in perspective. I was actually much more surprised about the 11,5% market growth of North America after only reading doom and gloom about their big 6 airlines. A North American growth of 11,5% encompasses more then the total traffic of Latin America...

So using 2004 numbers given the top 10 Latin America Airports :

1- MEX, Cidade do Mexico, Mexico >20.0
2- CGH, Sao Paulo, Brazil 13.3
3- GRU, Sao Paulo, Brazil 12.5
4- CUN, Cancum, Mexico 10.0
5- BSB, Brasilia, Brazil 9.8
6- GDL, Guadalajara, Mexico 7.0
7- MTY, Monterrey, Mexico 7.0
8- GIG, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 6.0
9- EZE, Buenos Aires, Argentina 5.5
10- AEP, Buenos Aires, Argentina 5.2

Do i forget anyone ? SCL seems to be a 4.6 mm pax per year, it's right ?
This Year probably BSB will be ranked 4 and GIG ranked 6.

Here is another list based on 2002 official traffic:

1. MEX
2. GRU
3. CGH
4. CUN
5. BSB
6. CCS
7. GDL
8. SCL
9. AEP
10. SSA
11. LIM
12. EZE
13. MTY
14. CWB
15. REC

6 airports are in Brazil; 4 are in Mexico; 2 in Argentina.

Tks for the remark! Here is the new revised list:

1. MEX
2. GRU
3. CGH
4. CUN
5. BSB
6. GIG
7. CCS
8. SDU
9. GDL
10. SCL
11. AEP
12. SSA
13. LIM
14. EZE
15. MTY
16. CWB
17. REC

These are based on 2002 data (BOG is ommited from the list so I cannot rank).

It would be nice if someone could comewith the 2004 figures. I'm sure EZE is now ranked higher in the list.

All in all, of the top airports in Latin American, you could group them in two:

1. More than 10mil pax/year
MEX, GRU, CGH, CUN and BSB

2. From 5 to 10mil pax/year
BOG, CCS, GDL, MTY, GIG, EZE, SCL, AEP, SDU, SSA, LIM

In order to establish the correct ranking we should use data available to all airports. Saddly, there is not info ready for 2004, so we have to use data for 2003 like Hardiww used in reply 23. We know 2004 was a good year so we can expect all airports to grow their traffic (in different magnitudes), but we still cannot rank them.

here a list including SJU, SCL and BOG.

1. MEX 20.5 M
2. GRU 12.8 M
3. CGH 12.5 M
4. SJU 9.4 M (consider SJU as a US airport)
5. CUN 7.8 M
6. BOG 7.6 M
7. BSB 7.1 M
8. CCS 6.6 M
9. GIG 5.8 M
10. GDL 5.3 M
11. SDU 5.3 M
12. SCL 5.3 M
13. AEP 4.5 M
14. SSA 4.3 M
15. LIM 4.3 M
16. EZE 4.0 M
17. MTY 3.7 M
18. CWB 3.5 M
19. REC 3.4
20. PLU 3.2 M

I know this are old figures, and we already have 2004 figures for Brazilian and Argentinian airports, but they are not available for Colombian nor Mexican nor Chilean. We know EZE is now larger than AEP reaching 5 M, but we do not know how many pax used GDL or LIM in 2004.

I am updating all numbers for all Latin American airports for 2004. I am only missing LIM and SJU. For now I can tell you that there are some nice movements in the final ranking... For instance, SCL formidable growth now close to GIG.

All figures come from the very own Aeronáutica Civil areas in each country.

As soon as I have them, I will post them in a different thread.

Only a little note, GIG was not so strong on 2004 but seems that this year it become much more larger due to flight realocation from SDU (which will probably down up to 10 positions). All Latam traffic is improving fastly in the last 18 months which is very good!

Good to see someone from so long very interested in Latam.
