Well, you would kind of have to break it down by smaller, medium and large airports. Places like BLV would more than double cause of Allegiant that now flies there.

Percent of traffic

Percentage of passenger traffic or percentage of aircraft movements?

Well MSP will be growing a lot once the new runway opens in October. It is estimated the traffic there will grow 25%. MSP is the largest airport in that world that only operates 2 runways at one time.

Fort Lauderdale is growing at a rapid rate. Among top 50 airports, i'm sure it's the fastest growing.

ok boys here we go.. i think ive got the top 4. Im not sure how accurate this is.. its a study from the Boyd group. some of the information is planned future growth but its supposedly based on current groth rates.

http://www.wowktv.com/story.cfm?func=viewstory&storyid=2671 thats

The article is of course about CRW ( a charleston news station) but just go to the bottom to see the cities..
boyd is saying Bangor, Boston, and sarasota ar the fastest growing airports in the u.s.

Also theres this .. also from boyd.

http://www.airportsusa.com/images/AirportsUSAMay05.pdf

well most of its prediction but once again its based on current boardings. very intersting presentation. true or not lol

Interestingly enough Massport says that BOS will not grow at the rate the Boyd Group estimates. Boyd estimates that by 2010 BOS will handle roughly 35 million passengers (about 8.5 million more than in 2004). Massport says that will not happen although I think part of the reason why they say that is because they don't want it to. They can barely keep it going at 26 million, I think they're afraid they'll not be able to handle that much. Who's to say!

I know we are on pace this year to have record numbers of pax, which I love to see, I hope we see some new routes/ upgrades on planes on exsiting routes. If anything a new aiport is warranted, but after the Big Dig mess how likely is that to happen in the next 15 years?

ATL will be growing some 5-6% if not even up to 10%, which is huge given that ATL handles over 80 million pax per year and will likely break the 90 million barrier next year, with a small chance that it happen this year already.
Also, Orlando (MCO) has been growing at a good rate, surpassing MIA (for now), in particular thanks to DL/Song/Delta Connection.

Not likely! As has been discussed over-and-over again there's no place within 50 miles for an airport. That and Massport is really putting their eggs in the basket that is Logan. I don't think it's a wise idea but given how organized the NIMBYs are and how political Massachusetts is there's not really much of an option.

Anyway, I think BOS will see about 28,5-29 million this year. Next year will top 30 million if growth continues in the same manner.

JetBlue will certainly help raise those passenger numbers at BOS.
For such a relatively small airport and catchment area (it's not a hub for any airline), BOS never ceases to amaze me with the variety and volume of traffic that it handles. As my home airport, I love it.

Anyways as far as fastest growing airports, no one has mentioned LAS. This airport continues to get bigger, to the point where they are about to open an extension of the D gates, and they have long range plans to build a new terminal and a new airport as well. MCO also has long range plans to build a new terminal to accomodate its growth, and they just opened a new runway.

DFW on the other hand is a mystery. They have spent money on airport expansions, and the growth seems to be stagnant at best as no one wants to go head to head with thier AAdvisAAry, plus Southwest wants to expand from Love field. I am doing my own study on that, and will share the results with this forum.

Boyd is actually forecasting traffic from 2004 to 2009. In an industry where there are so many variables, these forecasts are often way off.

In an airport management trade group MSY belongs to there is a recent article and table which details 2004 airport passenger/cargo/movements at airports worldwide. However, I can't get it to load. When I can, I'll post what I find out. I'll try some other trade sites, as well.

Knowing recent passenger traffic history, and not having any idea what I'll find, I'm guessing that LAS, FLL, and likely PHX would be among those with the highest percentage passenger traffic growth.

Here at MSY, we were up 4.7% on our passenger traffic from 2004 over 2003.

Apodino,

Figures by the Airport Council Intl. for 2002 show that MSP is ranked 7 and LHR ranked 13 for aircraft movements. fairly certain that current figures would still reflect that ranking.

Yea, you can say MSP has more movements, but look at the difference in the size of planes that pass through the airports, I don't know they numbers, but how many widebodies come through LHR and how many go through MSP? Also you have to figure, London has two main airport, LGW and LHR. I rather have more pax and more widebodies coming through than total aircraft movements any day.

Considering that I just flew in and out it, I would say XNA (Northwest Arkansas Regional) is one of the fastest growing US airports.

In the first full year of operations, 1999, the airport's total passenger count was 653,022. Last year, 2004, the total passenger count was 1,020,146. If my math is correct, that is a growth of 64% in six years, averaging almost 11% growth per year.

Just an FYI as XNA is not on most people's radar.

Check it out.

Crw's boardings are still on track as shown in that article. they havent been growing like that for a full year yet, but its getting pretty close to it. ited be amazing if we could hold these numbers and end up with a 28+% increase in one year.

I work at the Orlando Sanford International Airport, and for the calendar year 2004, SFB was the fastest growing airline airport in all of North America, with a total growth of 46%, domestic traffic growth of 71%,and international traffic growth of 34%, all compared to 2003. We ended up with more than 1.8 million passengers last year. This is the 3rd time in the past 6 years we've been the fastest growing in North America.

The main official source of actual traffic counts is from the Airports Council International in Geneva (www.airports.aero) or its North American sector (www.ACI-NA.org). You can check all the stats from their web sites, but you actually have to search the spreadsheets to check the percentage growth by world region. It's a bit time consuming.

So suddenly only widebodies constitute airplane movements?  Yeah sure A movement is a movement, and MSP is busier than LHR by movements. That is fact. The number of widebodies is irrelevant.

And how about IAD for fastest growing airports in the US, IAD's movements grew 65% last year. I'm sure the passenger numbers increased greatly as well.

yea ive heard a lot about xna lately, alot of the talk is about larger airports and im more into the regional ones. Where are they getting their pax from wnyway? they must have a huge catchment area.

The catchment area is in actuality, quite small.
Most of the traffic is bound for Bentonville, headquarters of Wal-Mart.
The flights are full of salesreps making the trip to pitch their products to the world's largest retailer.
I have a friend who flies SMF-DFW-XNA, at least once a month, and she works for a small nursery that sell into only western States stores..take someone like a Proctor and Gamble, and there are a lot of people going to XNA, from all over the world. Think of all the products they sell. Some of the biggest companies, like P&G, may have 50 reps alone that handle the Wal-Mart account.

(Last Week was the classic South Park episode of the boys trying to kill the "Wall-Mart". Funny Chit!)

Actually haven't been all that bad lately from what i've seen, but the airlines love the business pax paying last minute fares at high $$ so it's well made up.

Neither LGA nor SEA has more PAX than MSP, and whether you believe it or not MSP is busier than LHR by movements. Check www.airports.org if you don't believe it.

Like he said. Passenger traffic is not the same as air traffic, LHR can fly nothing but 747s and MSP is still busier by these standards. All because of all those NW regionals...I have always liked MSP, I'd like to fly through there again.

According to the airport website, IAH traffic is up quite a bit in the first three months of 2005 compared to the first three months of 2004.

Domestic travel is up 10.1%
International travel is up 20.4%

International should grow even more with CO's new flights to Flores/Tikal, Cali, and potentially Buenos Aires. Mexico service will be up to 76 a day on CO and Express during the week and more on weekends. China Airlines is also adding another weekly flight and PIA is bringing back the 2nd frequency.
