How Much Does A Diversion Cost An Airline?

Wed Jun 01, 2005 5:29 am

I was wondering, how much does something like this cost? And obviously it depends on hotels, fuel, distance etc, but is there a minumum it costs? is there any plan airlines have to avoid known delays like weather diversions etc?

Anyone have figures , like record highs?

Im sure 9/11 had some, but im talking about ordinary operations, not something drastic like 9/11!

thanks
The only time there is too much fuel onboard, is when you're on fire!

I recall reading on an A.net thread that a diversion was roughly $75,000 on average.

It's a very rough average because there isn't a set cost. It is just the accumulation of various costs. Some airlines only have to pay 1 bill when diverting while others would have to pay 20 different bills. It's all dependent on the airline, the airport, and the aircraft.
It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

Four years ago, I had a friend on AA DFW-NRT diverted to ANC due to ‘passenger service’ – more like passenger dis-service. The FBI had to remove one drunk passenger who went postal on the FAs.

The Captain wanted this passenger’s bag pulled. Needless to say, the crew went illegal while AS personnel were searching for his bag. Overnight the entire 777.

Diversion to outstation. $ - ching

Hotel for 200+ pax. $$ - ching, ching

No Triple 7 in Narita to operate the reciprocal service. $$$ - ching, ching, ching

Add it all up - this diversion cost AMR in excess of 6 digits just because some idiot had too much vodka at the Admiral’s Club.
