How Much To Develop A380-900?

Wed Jun 01, 2005 9:18 pm

If Airbus launches the 900 version of the A380, how much will it cost to develop?

Any guesses?

I guess not that much... just like the shorter/longer versions of the A320. The wings don't need to be changed, nor the systems. All they need to do is add a few chunks of fuselage and get the right engines on, and voila, there is your A380-900  Wink

Well there would also need structural strenghting and other changes. Maybe landing gear and brake changes, as well as the higher thrust engines already mentioned.

But, I agree these will not cost that much, perhaps around $500M US. These changes are pretty much what any airplane needs to be streched.

Sure, they will be more powerful engines, but are the gears/brakes and the structural things not already considered regarding a future stretched to the A389?

Yes Patrick, I think you are right. The 380-800 is designed to be stretched with not much effort.

That would not be the normal progression towards matuering the design. That is not unique to the A-380, but applies to all airplane designs that are planned to be streched, from the program onset, like the A-380 is.

Airbus might have done this, to the A-380-800, but I doubt it. Normally you want to get the basic design through flight testing, then into service, before you actually go ahead with different models of the basic design. This gives time for minor or major problems to develop, so they can be corrected in follow-on models.

Yes, the A-380-800 is designed with the thought of a streched -900 model. But you still will have structueral changes.

Correct, but these will be minor changes like engines and adding a few sections onto the fuselage... not redesign of the wings/undercarriage/tail section/cockpit etc...

That's airbus' main philosphy. They have applied it in the past and will apply it to the A380 as well. Besides, they have already mentioned that they have designed the A388 with minimum changes for the A389 in mind  Wink
