Air NZ Business Class

Thu Jun 02, 2005 1:06 pm

Have Air NZ started rolling out the new Virgin Atlantic style business class across their fleet yet? If so, what aircraft (i assume 744) and what routes will get them first? If not, when are they planning on doing it?

What I have heard is that the 777 and 747 will have the new suites. The first 747 just went in for refurbishment recently. The first routes to get the new seats will be AKL-LAX and AKL-SFO (which will have the first new 777s after teething issues are worked out) and then when the 3rd 747 is fitted in the fall, AKL-LAX-LHR will get the new seats as it is a route with high demand for premium travel. CHC-LAX and flights to Japan will be the last to get the refurbished 747s since there is less competition on those routes.

If you have any questions about specific flights and planes, ask NZ1 here on Anet because he is a very knowledgeable person with more detailed information on Air New Zealand.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

ZK-SUI is in the process of being fitted out at the moment.

It is supposed to be returning sometime this month, and I believe its first few flights will be to Brisbane, presumably to sort out any teething problems...

ZK-SUI is the first NZ B744 to have the refit. EIS for -SUI has been delayed because of some problems, but nothing NZ1 and fellow NZ MX employees can't handle. The B772s will arrive with the new cabins already installed.

There's a slightly delayed roll out media date for the new spec, but still it will be in service much earlier than November. Was just reading the 'in-house' staff release on the whole timeline & details of the spec. Compared to the 744 F/C/Y I was on today - it's going to be bloody paradise.

Hi all,

The entry into service of ZK-SUI, the first of the 74Rs, has been delayed from 10 June 2005 until 13 July 2005 due to unexpected technical complications (alluded to by NZ1 in earlier posts).

The new entry into service for the first three aircraft will now be..

13 July
01 September
27 October

Thanks Rob. Yes there have been one or two hair pulling moments, mainly due to getting the seats certified etc, and getting the wiring looms here on time, as mentioned in a previous thread/post.

Thanks Jason. We can handle anything, provided we have the parts!!!!!!!

Yes thats right. They will also be flying to SYD as well, for the same reason. They will then be deployed on the AKL-SFO route.

Cheers

At this stage no it won't. However, depending on how things go with SUJ (next aircraft) then it might.

This is in reference to a posting from NZ1 a week or more ago in which he said that (in effect) the 777LR while in AKL would be put into one of the hangers to see if it fitted. Thus is the -LR under consideration or is it because it has the same wing span as the -300ER which is under active consideration?

I need to be careful what I say here. Umm. Lets just say, we are evaluating ALL our options.

Is there a link to see what NZ will be offering in their new J class? Thanks for the information.

Ooooh NZ1 you big tease!
Can't think what NZ would want the 772LR for (except perhaps US east coast, but wouldn't think that would justify it), but it's an intriguing thought.

Hopefully I will get to be onboard the Boeing 772LR from SYD-AKL next month..... That'd be great if I do get the opportunity - let's cross fingers...

Try the www.airnz.co.nz website - there's a fair bit there..

A colleague by devious means showed me a low resolution set of seat maps recently. The NZ 744 appears to be identical in configuration to the VS 744 which has the suites in zone A and zone B as well as the forward half the upper deck shared with premium economy in the rear half.

It looked very good.

Sadly the 777 did not look as good. The 26 suites are arranged in the main deck 747 style but to both of us it looked as if it was a very cramped cabin compared to the wider 747 cabin. We also noted that the generosity of premium economy in the 744 with big 2 by 2 seating was not extneded to the 777 which was still three by three by three but with enhanced legroom.

I hope NZ doesn't screw up on those points. It is a great carrier to fly with long haul.

Antares

PS No I'm not going to post the diagrams because they aren't on my computer and my colleague promised not to display them anyhow.

I'm looking at those very seat maps right now, I think it will be great on both.

I must say that the 'A Zone' does appear to be cramped, not just on the maps, but on the aircraft itself. I was in one of the seats earlier today, and did find it a little claustrophobic, though very comfortable.

Also on a sidenote for info. SUI and SUJ will not roll out with the mood lighting installed due to problems acquiring the wiring looms. 1st aircraft with mood lighting will be NBW, aircraft number 3. SUI will be retrofitted in April next year, with SUJ a month later.

I have flown on a very similar 'A Zone' seating layout B744 to NZ's new cabin, a total 14 Seats on the aircraft I flew on. The cabin did look cramped but was very comfortable to travel in, and you did not notice the cramped look after a while. I had plenty of room and did not feel closed in at all.
