Good news for LOT!

Will the service be flown by the 767-200 or 300?

Where will the get the free 767 from, are they cutting down on other routes?

Will the flight be daily?

Rob!

For the beginning 3 weekly.

They will have 6th 767 added to the fleet any day. During the summer it will increase frequencies on US routes while starting Oct will go to Delhi.

I thought they initially intended to launch the service in 2004 - why the delay?

Will LOT be a discount player to Delhi like Aeroflot is? Or is LOT considered a more premium airline? That said, good for LOT. Nice to see more varried connections into India (rather than just AMS, FRA, CDG, etc).

Basically, the article says LOT will be resuming flights to Asia in October this year. They will fly to New Delhi three times a week and are studying the possibility of services to Beijing next year, Bangkok in 2008 and eventually Japan (presumably Tokyo) around 2010.

There are two reasons why India and China have been chosen as the first Asian destinations. Firstly India and China the world's most rapidly developing markets in terms of aviation and Poland isn't far behind either. Secondly, these routes are expected to be more popular in the autumn and spring months and therefore LOT will be able to better utilise its aircraft - in the summer months they have 100% loads on their routes to America (apparently a European record) but out of season they have trouble filling their aircraft.

In addition, LOT will be upgrading their business class cabin and not increasing the number of ecomomy class seats as they will be aiming at higher fare paying passengers on these routes.

Is there a natural market from WAW to both China and India?

for the India market, at least, they don't have the frequency or the capacity to make serious inroads for transit pax to N. America.

This will be good - I last flew with LOT DEL-WAW-FRA way back in 1990!! That was my first international flight to Europe, and was the first time I started eating meat  Smile I remember quite a pleasant flight, though the WAW airport at that time really sucked. However the airport has improved considerably now (I was in WAW last in 2002).
Incredible India!

Aerosvit has been serving these markets from right next door for at least two years now. Its steadily growing, and a majority of the passengers are from Poland, Hungary and Czech, tourists, and business people. LOT is now getting on the band wagon, and they will likely do well.

I think that the addition of another 767 to the fleet this summer is for the sub-contract LOT is doing for Aerosvit, whereby a LOT aircraft will operate KBP-YYZ-KBP through this summer on Aerosvit's behalf. They have already applied for CTA approval for this, same as last summer. In the fall this plane will be surplus and they will be able to do the DEL thing...

Yes, as Slawko mentioned traffic is quickly growing on these routes. In addition to that remember that LOT offer will be the best choice to get to anywhere in the eastern Europe (as CSA and Malev do not fly to Asia).
