Who Is Still Flying The B747-SP

Thu Jun 02, 2005 10:57 pm

The Boeing 747SP.... one of my favourites!

I just got to wondering which airlines are still using these beautiful old birds? I know Iran Air, Syrian Air and Saudi Arabian Airways still have some in the air..... where are the rest that remain?  Smile

As for pax flights,I think the only ones are

YK-AHA
YK-AHB
EP-IAD

Thats about all i think, the SV 747SP's as far as i know are just used for VIP flights...

JFK in the 80's must have been quite a site for 747SP's: TWA, AA, United, PanAm, Korean, Saudi Arabian, SAA, and at one point even Iran Air. I'm not sure about Braniff. LHR must have been good too with just as many if not more carriers operating the SP there.

It was in at MAN the other day, apparently. There is also a photo in the database of it on 29th March.

It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong

Does the 747SP has the same type rating like the other "classics". I mean since it is so short it must fly completely different !!!

Does anybody know if Iran Air still operate B747SP to NRT? I know they often swap B747 combi to the flight. Iran Air's website didn't work properly to check it out.

In 1984 I flew 747SP on PanAm JFK-SFO-HKG-SIN and return right after the Olympics. You get real sick of the fishtailing in turbulence after a while, though.

Of course flying their helicopter connection service from EWR-JFK via the financial center in Manhattan was fun for a kid of 11!

There are also those aircraft parked in Tunisia which are still registered as being owned by Iraqi Airways.

No idea whether they are currently flyable but they did get regular maintenance of some sort. Anyone know any more about them and their condition?
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

Yes, Iran Air still operate THR-PEK-NRT with the 747SP.
It's also used on the Seoul route on the way back to THR.
These days it's EP-IAD, as the others are not in service at the moment.

I suggest a look at our Productionlist for the current status of all 747SP's.

They're not being fully maintained and if they ever would be considered back for operations again they would require heavy maintenance work.
Not sure it would be worth it to be honest.

The transition to 747SP from -100 series is easy. It only requires a flight in the simulator and some theory. More than 90% commonality.

Interesting. Where did you find out about this ?

There are currently 15 747SP's in active service.
Most of them in VIP outfitting, and if you want to get a ride in one....
These are your options:
Syrian 747SP YK-AHA c/n: 21174
Syrian 747SP YK-AHB c/n: 21175
Iran Air 747SP EP-IAD c/n: 21758

Just like Tugmaster says. And I'm not sure how the Saudi 747SP's are used. For commercial flights or only VIP's...

Anyone with info on Saudia's 747SP operations ? I would love to hear.
