Spirit Cries Foul Over Delta's "double Standards"

Fri Jun 03, 2005 4:33 am

Spirit Airlines has place a docket today in response to Atlantic City's SCAD grant to subsidize Delta Connection service to Atlanta. Specifically, they claim that it would be unfair to give Delta the subsidies while Spirit would not have them, even though they would essentially be competing in the same market (Delta estimates that 62% of their ATL-ACY connecting traffic would continue to Florida). And they specifically refer to Delta's Witchita incident. Interesting read:

The difference however is that the SCASD grant is designed only to cover the intial start-up costs for starting a new route. Regardless of connections, the ACY-ATL route is a new route.

DL's complaint with Airtran subsidies at ICT is that they have become long-term subsidies...not just to cover inital start-up costs. Let me put the next phrase in big type:

DL DID NOT COMPLAIN WHEN AIRTRAN RECEIVED START-UP SUBSIDIES IN 2002.

However, DL is now complaining because the initial start-up period is over and Airtran is still being subsidized. The subsidies have nothing to do with covering start-up costs....they are now just corporate welfare.

Spirit, if you don't like it, start flying ACY-ATL, and ask for subsidies yourself. Spirit would have a point if they flew the route already, but since they don't, they should either put up or shut up. Spirit has 4 flights to Florida a day out of ACY, a majority of Spirit's flights out of ACY, but not worth making a Federal issue out of. There's no telling how many folks that live close to ACY choose to fly in/out of PHL for better connecting opportunities and nonstop flight to Florida.

After all the ICT stuff being talked about all the time in other threads, at least time DL is defending its own subsidies. There is no regulation on them and the individual cities/airport authorities should have their own say in it. There is no need to regulate as the public still decides who is flying there. The individual cities would not pay them if they did not demand that carrier's service, leave it at that!!

I do agree wtih FlyPNS's statements.

Quoting Srbmod (Reply 2):

No they don't. They have, during the slower summer season, six daily flights to Florida. During the winter, that doubles to 12, with PBI service added and one additional flight to each other city.

I was going off of the ACY arrivals on Flytecomm, and just checked back, they list a few more Florida flights arriving that were not there earlier.

Finally!

It's nice to see ACY getting some additional air service, though I can understand if Spirit is upset at the DL subsidy.

Did Spirit receive any subsidy when it started up at ACY?

NK has never been subsidized by anybody in ACY. In fact, in the time NK has been there, DL has been subsidized (for CVG) and CO was subsidized TWICE (and they aren't even there anymore).

However, I don't agree with this either (and you can tell who I work for), as long as the subsidy is just for start-up only, and not a continuous thing like in ICT.
