WOW...A380 And A318 Flying Side-by-side!

Fri Jun 03, 2005 5:19 am

I don't know how to put the pics up here...but here are the links.

It does show the size of The Wooly Mammoth compared to another aircraft...I think this is the first true side-by-side comparison...albeit a much smaller aircraft...

not sure if this is a true photo..but still, The WhaleJet looks HUGE!!

just confirms my opinion from long ago that the reason the A380 looks awkward from some angles it is pretty much a scaled up A319 in all proportions! That second photo clearly confirms this. It's scary how much the same they are from a purely visual standpoint (imagine them with no windows). Cool second rendering, though the first pic looks modified. Even with the A319 being much closer, it seems off.

Ikramerica

Its a 318 not a 319. Distorts the size a bit more, but your point is still very valid.

I wonder whether the A318 experienced any significant wake turbulence in such close formation flight.

yeah, sorry. 319/318 look a lot alike to me from far away, couldn't read the tail in the second pic and didn't read the PR stuff on the right. Both the 318/319 are "cute" and "squat" compared to the 320 and especially the 321. The A380 also looks "cute" and "squat" which detracts from it's bigness when not put next to a tiny plane.

The A389 should be better looking, assuming it is noticeably longer. Just like the A346 looks a bit overly long, the A380 looks too short.

Even the pics of the 747Adv make that plane better looking, so the A389 would only benefit from stretching, looks wise.

Note how much larger the windows appear on the A318. That gives a sense of how much bigger the A318 appears to be relative to the actual difference in size. A photo from a different angle, in which the A318 and the WhaleJet are equidistant from the lens, would be even more dramatic.

Something doesn't look right on these pics.
looks like some copy-paste actions!

I can't wait to be in Paris for Le Bourget in 2 weeks to see the King of the Skies for REAL!!!

They'll maybe fly the Baby A318 next to the Big Daddy A380 side-by-side there, as they bring both of them (+the A346 by the way). It should be very impressive!  Wow!

i think its a parallax...and the A318 is closer to the foreground than The WhaleJet is...same with the 2nd picture (A318 is in the backround)...

regardless..its HUGE...we'll get a better grasp of things when its idle next to another plane...maybe a 747-400........

No... the A318 is in the foreground when viewing both aircraft from their port side (left). When viewing the picture from the starbord side (right) the A318 is naturally in the background.

They caught the cloud conditions and lighting perfectly... I wish they had a high-resolution version available for download...

ummm..Dfw...I'm saying the same thing.... Wink

with the top pic of the A318 in the foreground and rotating the angle basically by 180 degrees, we are going to see a change in whats in front, and whats behind..but I still agree...higher resolution woud have been better!

I know, I've noticed that. But I'm still not totally convinced. It's maybe the poor resolution of the pictures. I'd like to see these photos in 1024x768 or even more.

But I agree this should not be far from the reality: the A318 is so tiny and the A380 so BIG that the difference is sure IMPRESSIVE!  eyepopping

Reminds me of WWII escort fighters and a bombers

They should attach A318s to the top of A380s like they do with the space shuttle. Heck that way the A380 could deploy the A318 to smaller destinations and provide P2P service.

Because the A 318 is WAY too close to be in formation under any circumstances, much less so early in the development of such a program with the only prototype.

Look at the "fuzz" around the airplanes - photoshop.

No fake here, the A318, the A340-600 and the A380 have been performing photos in formation above the Pyrenees on Wednesday.

There are more beautiful pics, especially with the A346 and the A380 but I don't know when they will release them.

The fuzz around the edges in no way indicates faking. When compressing photos, hard edges get the most fuzz due to the neighboring pixel dependent technique they use.

That said, the second one does sort of look fake. I thought the second one was a rendering. And I also believe that 318 is way too close in the second one, unless this was a test to test wake, jetwash, etc. In the first one, there is more seperation, plus the A318 is higher.

Either way, still a cool thing.

BTW - Boeing has some pretty convincing fakes on their website comparing various models that look a lot like 2 (but in Boeing livery and with Boeing jets of course).

Just for what it's worth, it's an A318 with PW rather than CFM. (And the A380, of course, has RR so nothing for GE here. That's unusual these days!)

Good catch on the engines. The man knows his nacelles!

I'm a little surprised RR didn't mix the turbine/fan exhaust on the A380, but obviously the noise reduction wasn't worth the added nacelle weight. I'll be curious to see how close the A388 is to the QC2 noise threshold. Or in other words, will the A389 make QC2.

Fake or not, WHATEVER! The point is to show the differences between the two planes....easy to find...  Wink

But what I would like to see is THE WHOLE airbus fleet in NEW Airbus house livery flying next to each other from small to big. So from A318 (the smallest right??) till the A380 and all other types in between.... what a wet dream  Smile

im pretty sure the first photo is a fake that airbus produced. the sizing and everything is accurate and just one photo on top of another. the reason i say this is, in a discussion recently (not sure which) but was decided the aircrafts air wake would flip any plane coming to close but anyway shows how similar they are and a nice size comparison

There's only one thing for certain, the A380 might be one of the most visually unappealing planes on earth despite it's impressive heft. The off-centre profile shot looks like a giant forehead...I'll take the 744 any day...a sexy lady still...

There's only one thing for certain, the A380 might be one of the most visually unappealing planes on earth despite it's impressive heft. The off-centre profile shot looks like a giant forehead...I'll take the 744 any day...a sexy lady still...

no arguments on that end, but it would be nice to get the entire Airbus family tree flying together on one pic..if they had a poster for that..I'd purchase one...but my 777 cockpit frame is tops!  yes
