Hi,
Swissair uses the MD-11 and the A330 to Frankfurt and Munich, too.

Boston is quite logic as that is a long-haul flight. It is indeed strange that SR is using (if they do so on regularbasis) the MD-11 or A330 on short- to medium haul flights. Anu SR specialists who knows the answer?

Congratulations Sndp! I was wondering when someone would catch my "little sarcasm" and figure out that Boston is a "long distance route" which would require an MD11 (of course if the flight orginated in Zurich!)

Heaven forbid they fly a A321 between BOS and ZRH

I've seen on several occassions Swissair MD-11 at Chicago ORD last fall. I was under impression that they use them for long range flights regularely.

i also noticed that and plus i would think that Swissair would fly an A-321 or and A-320 on the route but I guess not, and for BOS-that would require a 767,747,777,A-340,A-330 or and MD-11 lets hope that swissair uses one of those aircraft and NOT a short range Airbus jet

Serious, as anybody knows the MD-11 is a long-houl airliner.
The flight SR 800/803 ZRH-LHR-ZRH is indeed a regulary MD-11 flight.
I think the reason is, they whant the MD-11 to have more hours in the air, this brings money. I meen the London flight is to fill up between two long-distance flights. E.g. the MD-11 comes in the morning from the US and leaves in the evening to Sao Paolo, there will enough time in between to fly to London (this is only an example).

Swissair has 7 daily flights from ZRH to LHR (mar.26 to oct.28)

SR800: MD11 dep:07:30
SR802: A32X dep:12:15
SR804: A32X dep:16:00
SR806: A32X dep:17:40
SR814: A32X dep:18:30 (sunday:18:15)
SR808: A32X dep:19:55
SR810: A32X dep:20:55

Now to your specific question:
the flight SR800/803 is the first of the day and the best
to get a conection at Heathrow (for exp. to fly from LHR to Nassau or Dallas).
Many business people also use this flight early in the morning.
This flight is very seldom fully booked but there are always enough to keep it profitable.
The MD11 which flies this route is back to Zurich on 12:20 pm. This MD11 then usually departs Zurich in the afternoon as SR 108 to San Francisco (dep.:16:20).
(SR MD11's ocasionally also fly to Paris if there are enourgh passengers.)
regards Simon.
