Sahara Delhi-Chicago In Winter 2005

Fri Jun 03, 2005 8:54 am

As per an article in Economics Times, Sahara in alliance with UA, has been granted permission by Govt. of India to start Delhi-Chicago in winter of 2005.
This may be old news, but there seems to be real progress in terms of having approvals in place. Delhi residents have one more option to connect one-stop to LAX/SFO/IAH/IAD and many other cities.

The article also mentions fares of Rs 35,000(about US $800) for India-USA. Is that off peak and only on likes of AI? Does anyone know?

Excerpts from the article:
Air Sahara has been allowed to start a daily flight between Delhi and Chicago under a code-share agreement with United Airways. Under this agreement, Sahara can start Chicago operations from the winter of 2005, the official said.
Air Sahara plans to have a joint marketing initiative with United for the India-US flights, under which tickets on the Delhi-Chicago sector would be sold through a common network and revenues and costs shared between the two carriers. This will mark United's return to the Indian skies nearly three years after it flew out of the country.

UA will have NO shortage of pax from/to delhi but personally i will pass. With asian carriers providing far superior service (atleast JAL from personal experience) who needs UA's crappy service (speaking again from personal experience)

however, as a Aviation fan I do wish good luck to UA and Sahara.

Neat- UA has substantial feed into ORD to help the Sahara flight fly full every day and give passengers one more option to connect to India. How will the arrival in Delhi time with connections onward to Chennai, Mumbai and Bangalore among others?

Delhi will soon have non-stops to Chicago, Newark, and Toronto, but Mumbai will have no North American services, even though Mumbai is typically the stronger yielding market. I wonder who will be first with a USA/Canada-Mumbai non-stop. It don't think it is far off. Oh well, ye to hai.

It has to be round trip. I just saw an ad for US$ 830 for RT to BOM, and US $890 for RT to MAA from LAX in one of the ethnic weekly paper in Los Angeles. It doesn't mention the airline though.

For this to work, they should try to bring their flight into Delhi by 3.00 am and provide onward connections to BOM/MAA/BLR/HYD between 6.00 and 8.00 a.m. I am not sure if Sahara has these departure times though.

No, they will start Newark-Delhi in November. Originally, it was going to be Newark-Mumbai, and it was to launch in November 2004. It even had the same flight number (CO 82/83) as the Newark-Delhi service will have.

Do they have an aircraft which can fly EWR-BOM non-stop? The 777 ER that they plan to use for DEL may have difficulty making it to EWR from BOM on return.

That may be one of the issues, though EWR-BOM is still shorter than EWR-HKG. However, because of the fact that a Newark-Bombay route can avoid overflying the Himalayas, I was under the impression it is actually an easier route for a twin-engine to fly.

Aircraft range is an issue for non stop service to BOM. If Jet were to get the two A345s from EK, then they should be the first to fly non stop to BOM, most likely from EWR. If not, then AI with their 772LRs, perhaps in 2007.
