Not good for their partner Finnair, which used to be the quickest way to Shanghai from LHR.

They were talking about the UK-China bilaterals. From March 06, 6 new frenquency between the UK and China can be exploited. Who will get those? What destinations would be served?

I wonder why BA did not turn PEK to a daily flight...
Next flights : BRU-ZRH-CAI (LX)/ BRU-FCO-TLV (AZ)

A second 777 and no 747? I'll probably get s*** for this, but doesn't this go counter to the reasoning that the A380 is needed because Heathrow is slot restricted and China is China???

Anyway, congrats to BA.

Any bets on the next city? Guanghzou? Dalian?

It would be a nice addition but I don't think it will come anytime soon for BA. There are 6 weekly services to be shared between 4 airlines and 5 chinese cities...

You mean 49 weekly flights, between BA, AirChina, VS, and MU?

What are the five cities?

This makes BA the third oneworld carrier to serve PVG, following AY and QF. AA will become #4 next April when it launches ORD-PVG with the 777.

well BA is not really interested in other cities in China at the moment, they could have lauched sevices a long time ago (except PVG) if they wanted.

who is the next after AA? i thought it could be LA or CX. IB doesn't seem to be very keen. don't think EI has too much a possilbility at this stage. of course, MU and JL are possibilities too.

Just a question here, Is QF and BA going to have any cooperation over PVG? Schedule wise, it doesn't seem so.
great to see BA here though.

I wasn't aware MU were in OneWorld either. Weren't they only cooperating, with the occasional codeshare (with BA) at this point? I remember when they were codesharing with AF - don't know if that's still accurate.

sorry, my post was a bit missleading, i didn't mean MU and JL are in oneworld, what i mean by next ow carrier to PVG is the possibility they might join. obviously MU is based in PVG and JL fly tonnes of flights daily to PVG. so i thought no one was going to put my idea the other way around.

Unlikely I think.

Given the number of oneworld services LHR-HKG between BA, QF and CX, Guangzhou's proximity to HKG and the relatively conveninent rail links between HKG and CAN, I cant see this happening any time soon...

I disagree for one reason. Many Chinese from the mainland are not able to travel to HK due to political reasons. So for them flying to LHR direct from Guanzhou would be very convenient rather than going through the hassle of getting permission to go to HK which most probably would be more difficult then getting a Visa to the UK.

Also Guanzhou is becoming a very important passenger and Cargo hub. I was there a week ago and I can tell you that place is booming! LH already has direct flight to FRA from there I think

EK156, unfortunately many aviation decisions are not based on logic or passenger preference. Given limited rights between UK and China, I would bet that BA or VS would go double daily to PVG before opening up CAN.

If there are Chinese pax from CAN that cant trasnit over HKG, then they can do so via PVG. easy.! as for LH flying into CAN... there are many reasons this may be happening, and its not merely because teh sector is profitable.

* is LH restricted from adding unlimited flights to HKG?
* was CAN a designated point in the China bilateral?
* Are there certain industries in Germnay and CAN that make CAN more profitable for LH??

You have to look at the bigger picture.

But CAN is a better freight destination than Shanghai. And I would believe many International Airlines will start flying to CAN soon.

But for a mainland Chinese, instead of travelling to LHR through HK which is only 30 minutes by plane... he/she will have to transit through Shanghai which is 1 hour and a half away and makes the flight longer. So I would think a CAN flight direct to LHR would be both beneficial through freight and passenger loads. Guanzhou is booming and the airport is amazing. Surprisingly I saw alot of foreigners there and met with alot of businessmen.

So expect alot of CAN as a hub in the near future... and don't be surprised if BA does start direct flight there...

If the CAN-LHR sector is such a profitable one, then why aren't any of the Chinese carriers operating it?????

Soon many will. If LH has started then I am sure others will follow. The premium destinations for passengers at the moment are Shanghai and Beijing. But soon CAN will also become an important hub.

BA only started Shanghai ... with time I think they will also consider CAN. EK will start Beijing next year. They are flying Shanghai and also Dalian but that one is freight only and soon they will also do CAN. Qatar Airways is flying both Shanghai and Beijing so I think soon they will also do CAN.

By the way, China Air has a freight service from CAN direct to Dubai. So I wouldn't be surprised if they start passenger service soon.

I know alot of companies in Dubai that ship direct by air or sea from CAN to the gulf region. and CAN is now hosting some interesting exhibitions.. so give it some time.

Well this is my opinion!

Cheers

it's not that hard to go to HK for chinese nationals and even the special permit is waived for pax holding an international air ticket. practically, most people in CAN do actually using HKG for international flights even direct flights from CAN are available. Many people do prefer CX or QF flights to SYD/MEL than CA or CZ direct to CAN.

as for LH's CAN flights, even they do via PVG

CAN as a better hub than PVG for Freight? can't see this point so far, provided most freight servies still go to PVG including the new NZ freight services.

i would say that CAN would be better served if it is not that closely located to HKG. i mean there are just so many economically important cities around HKG. Shenzhen is also quite important. these cities do get dicent direct services from SQ which is somewhat btw 3-4 hrs. for real long haul flights however, there is just not enough competition to force the carriers into the market.
for PVG, VS/MU were already in the competition, and was also de-linked from HKG, as CX can not offer pax flights.

I guess I was informed wrong then cause that is what they told me in Guanzhou when I was there 1 week ago!

This will make my argument invalid... ouch!!!.... lol

Some interesting details here:

BRITISH AIRWAYS has unveiled plans to take the battle for China to Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic. It has added the boom town of Guangzhou to its wish list of new routes, and opened its first new major route in years yesterday by launching a London-Shanghai service.

But chief executive Rod Eddington says 'there is all to play for' as the Chinese aviation authorities rapidly open up the skies to UK carriers. BA and Virgin will go head-to-head to land 16 new daily services to mainland China - more than double the current capacity.

The new route to Shanghai puts BA in direct competition with Virgin, which has been operating services there for the past six years.

Eddington, who leaves BA this autumn, said the airline is actively looking at a new route to Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong, the old province of Canton inland from Hong Kong. It is seen as the next emerging market. But he does not want to commit to headlong expansion in China despite the growth potential.

'Guangzhou with its new airport is a very interesting prospect,' he said. 'But the first thing we want to do is is bed down our new Shanghai services and our increased frequencies of three times daily to Hong Kong. In addition, we want to get up to a daily service to Beijing where we have been flying for the last 25 years ... with the increased capacity available, there is all to play for.'

In the longer term, BA is eyeing services to Chengdu and Wuhan, the capitals of enormously populated provinces in the interior that are as yet undeveloped in airport infrastructure terms.

The rush to China mirrors another battle with Virgin, to open up the giant Indian market.

The long history of bad blood between the two carriers has not been helped by rows with the British Civil Aviation Authority over who flies where in India, especially the plum route to the country's commercial centre of Mumbai-Airline insiders are forecasting-similar bloody battles over the carve-up of China.

The country could be on the shopping list of bmi, the former British Midland, which only last month launched its first long-haul flights out of Heathrow.

Meanwhile, BA said traffic rose by 3.2% in May, with its premium cabin performing particularly well. The flag carrier believes bmi has scored an own goal by axeing business class from its UK and European services.

BA chairman Martin Broughton said: 'We believe there is a business market on short-haul and we will not be cutting our business class cabins. We say thank you very much, bmi.'

Yes, AY will start in Sep, so Londoners can do LHR-HEL-CAN. And it's not a detour, as HEL is right on the way: the one-stop route is only 26 km longer than what LHR-CAN direct would be!
