AMC Airline Go For The B738

Fri Jun 03, 2005 10:35 pm

Egypt's largest charter airline, AMC Airline (formerly AMC Aviation) have decided to equip their fleet with 6 new B738s to modernise, standardise and expand their fleet. The first aircraft is expected in February 2006 and will start replacing their MD-83s. Details of the order are a little sketchy and the airline haven't stated the source of the aircraft (i.e whether they'll be directly purchased from Boeing or leased) however they will be new models. Going by the airline's previous deals, they'll probably lease the B738s.

Here is the extract from the article:

Aircraft Maintenance Corporation (AMC) ... is one of Boeing’s key clients in Egypt. The airline started operation in 1992 with a Boeing 737 and grown to become Egypt’s largest charter operator. Along the way it has added Airbus aircraft to its fleet, but the management remains firmly committed to the American aircraft manufacturer.

“We currently operate a mixed fleet of Boeing and Airbus, but Boeing aircraft dominate the majority of our fleet,” says Amr Gouda, the company’s planning director. He added that six B737-800s are expected to be delivered within the coming two years.

Gouda explains that because AMC operates flights from Egypt to 115 destinations throughout the world, it is attracted to Boeing’s long-range capabilities. “Fuel consumption is a major factor and Boeing is more economical than Airbus when it comes to this,” he says. “Moreover, Boeing enjoys an efficient passenger capacity that is reasonable to its price.”

The airline leased 2 B738s (one from SunExpress TC-SUJ and the other from Travel Service OK-TVC) for the last few months and were pleased with the performance.

The airline had operated a fleet of 6 MD-90s, but were forced to return them due to the difficult market conditions after 9/11 and the high lease payments on the aircraft.

Great news. I'm glad another operator has compared the two manufacturers aircraft in real world operations and found Boeing to be a better fit for thier needs.

Yeah, AMC's director did make a few bold statements comparing the 2 manufacturers.
