### Flight Durations

I hope I can explain my query clearly enough so here goes...

If a flight has left airport X at 10am and arrived at airport Y at 11am has it been in the air for that hour or does the taxiing at either end count in that hour as well? Also when an airport website has departed 10am is that the same as one that says airborne at 10am? and the same for landed 11am and arrived 11am are they both the same or not?

I'm confused, but it sounds like you are questioning time itself....!

If it left at 10am and arrived at 11am, the total journey time was 1 hour. Who knows how long was spent in the air and how long was spent taxiing!!

I'm not asking for specific figures!! Just for any given flight length are the taxi times etc built into that or is it solely in air time?

The airline scheduled departure time is the time the plane leaves the gate. The scheduled arrival time is the time the plane arrives at the gate at the destination.
Takeoff and touchdown times are not normally published or displayed in airport arrival/departure boards. These are meaningless to the passenger.

Yes, taxi times are built in to the schedules.. If a plane departed the gate at 11:00am, it has "departed". When a plane arrives at the gate at 12:00pm, it has "arrived".

...however, when the airline files the ATC flight plan, I believe the departure time refers to "wheels up" and the arrival time means arrival at the initial approach fix.

I think what you are asking is whether schedules or padded (i.e., time is added to the schedule at both ends of the trip to factor in taxiing, ATC, congestion, etc.). The answer is generally yes. Airlines very typically pad schedules to take taxiing and congestion delays into effect. For example, AA's LGA-DFW flights are all blocked (i.e., gate-to-gate) for 3.5-4.0 hours while the actually flying time is usually closer to 3.0 hours. They pad the schedules because of the congestion they know will inevitably happen at LGA, and thus keep their on-time numbers looking good. This is industry common practice.

As a PS, some airlines list the flight duractions (with little knife and fork / movie projector icons to show the service on each sector) seperately in the back of their timetables, and these are airborne flight durations.

Flight plans are filed with gate departure time, or proposed time.
Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.

Flight schedules are published as gate-to-gate with about 15-20minutes padding (depending on the airports) to account for possible minor delays.
