The Latest On DirectAir

Sat Jun 04, 2005 7:44 am

Hot off the presses....make that the internet. It's encouraging to see the consulting group has found this venture to be viable. Of course, the biggest problem with all of this is where to locate this airline at MSY if it does indeed take wing? There is not really enough gate space left to support a carrier with hopes of having up to 150 flights per day. But with some serious shuffling around anything is possible I guess.

Study reportedly encouraging for La. discount airline startup

An executive for a proposed Louisiana discount airline called DirectAir says he is encouraged by the findings of a consultant's study on the venture's viability. The study was recently completed by the Boyd Group for Louis Armstrong International in New Orleans, which would be the hub of the proposed discount carrier. DirectAir is hoping for economic backing from the state, but Louisiana Economic Development was waiting on the results of Boyd's study, among other things. John Miller, the CEO of DirectAir's holding company, says he is not authorized to release details of the study. DirectAir is proposing to fly a fleet of 737s to 50 destinations nationwide, with 150 daily departures out of Armstrong. The carrier would serve all six regional Louisiana airports. A one-way connection from Baton Rouge Metro to Armstrong would cost $25. Under an aggressive timeline, Miller says, DirectAir could be running by the fall of 2006.
