HP/US Frequent Flyers: FlightFund Or Dividend?

Sun Jun 05, 2005 8:55 am

With the proposed merger of America West and USAirways, both of their frequent flier programs will be combined into one new program spanning their combined network. What should the new frequent flyer program be called? FlightFund or Dividend? America West's Freddie award-winning FlightFund has won accolades for its Elite program and has a catchy yet very appropriate name. USAirways' Dividend Miles program, however, sounds like an antiquated program of a dying airline serving old decrepit CEOs like Bill Franke, Carl Icahn and Glenn Tilton. Should it be called USAirways FlightFund and they can continue to advertise its award-winning attributes?

It was announced the Dividend program would be the remaining combined product. Dividend miles has larger base of members then Flight Fund.

Yea, but does FlightFund sound very professional? I think they should stick with the Dividend miles, not just because of the name, but because it is already known throughout the Star Alliance.

Dividend Miles sounds very professional. As a matter of fact, I think the entire US Airways logo and branding (the name to the livery to the in-flight magazine to Envoy Class to Dividend Miles, et al) is very professional.

Here's hoping the US Airways livery stays the same.

What is your source? According to America West, no decision has been made to the name of the program at this time.

A new livery is yet to be decided. It has been determined that the costs of repainting HP planes to the darker US livery would be very costly. Also the dark paintjob would create an operational nightmare during the hot summers at PHX and LAS, which is ultimately very costly as well.

Doug Parker gave an interview either in the WSJ or one of the East Coast papers possibly the NY Times. In it he specifically mentioned just like the US Airways name being used for the merged airline, the US Airways Dividend Miles program would be the joint frequent flyer program. US Airways along with the DM program while currently somewhat tarnished does have a much better francshise and worldwide recognition. The DM program not only has more members then Flight Fund, but also is fully integrated within the Star Alliance in regards to membership tiers and award categories and levels.

I would think that they may actually adjust the current Dividend miles to look much more like FlightFund, which as a member of both I prefer FlightFund.
Looking forward to the new AA

Since Dividend has more members and FlightFund performs better, I'm sure they will integrate both into FlightFund and just change the name.

Exactly the same as turning US Airways into a big HP and just keeping the USAirways name.

Can someone please tell me what the differences are between FlightFund and Dividend Miles?

This is a little off topic and I'm sure it's been discussed before but why are they going to us the US Airways name?
Afterall, they don't call boats 'Titanic' anymore.

Back on topic, I think the 'Dividend Miles' program sounds more professional as well as the name of their in-flight magazine 'Envoy'.

Envoy is their Trans-Atlantic Business Class Product.
Their in flight magazine is called Attache.

In an email I received from Dividend Miles, I beileve it said that once both programs are integrated, that the Dividend Miles name will be the one that will stay.

It's truly amazing how many people say Dividend sounds more professional than FlightFund. Does the term "mutual fund" sound unprofessional? I just can't fathom Doug and gang doing away with an award-winning asset.

Um, the difference is Titanic sank, US did not. Besides the recent operational issues and bankrupcies after 9/11, US has a great history. They have won many awards and earned top ratings -- not all that long ago.

They have overcome more obstacles than anyone ever imagined they could, esp. after a series of crashes in the early 90s. Why? Because they enjoy an unbelievable loyal following.

One more thing: Let's not forget the bad reputation and the bankrupcies CO went through at one time. Look at them now. And they are still called CO.
