Round The World On Star, Price?

Sun Jun 05, 2005 11:20 am

I am considering doing a round-the-world trip on Star or OneWorld in March, 2006 for my next vacation. Star has a neat application you can download, the "Round The World Mileage Calculator", which actually allows you to put city pairs in and will spit you out flight numbers and everything.

I have been playing around with it and I have the following itenerary:

March 1, 2006: AUS-NRT UA657/NH7
March 4, 2006: NRT-HKG NH909
March 8, 2006: HKG-BKK TG601
March 11, 2006: BKK-SIN SQ65
March 14, 2006: SIN-MEL SQ217
March 22, 2006: MEL-DEL SQ238/SQ408
March 25, 2006: DEL-MUC LH763
March 27, 2006: MUC-CDG SQ2234
March 31, 2006: CDG-AUS UA943-US7905

total mileage 29696

My sister will be studying abroad in MEL, so that's why I have more time there than anywhere else.

I have avoided UA as much as possible, due to fear of their going Chapter 7 between now and then. I may switch my CDG-AUS flight to something else to get me off of UA.

So, any thoughts? Any sort of ballpark pricing on this? I am aware this won't be cheap, but can it be done under $5000 USD?

I've seen similar itineraries at work, and I think that, starting in the EU, the fare would be €2999 plus taxes - I think that's the fare for the routing that stays below 30000 miles.

But since I don't have CRS access at home, I can't check right now - I'll see if I have the time to check it tomorrow at work, and (if no-one else has done it by then) I'll either post the fare or send you an IM or eMail.

Regards,
Frank

Your best bet might be to follow this link.....
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=325688

..all of the prices and rules from the countries that the ticket is on sale from.

One tip though... on the Star Alliance tickets, the mileage "zones" are under 29,000, under 34,000 and under 39,000. So with that itinerary, I would advise either to change something slightly and try reduce the mileage, or increase the mileage and use the other 4,000 if you can to get the best value for your money.

Another tip... IMHO the *A buisness and first class tickets represent excellent value if you can afford it.

on the star alliance homepage, there is a tool where you can plan the whole itinery which will result in the total mileage and a price.

Brons2,

Given that Round-the-World fare is an across the board product, they should sell approx. the same in different countries (my  twocents  ). So check out the price on Star Alliance's HK website under the Air Passes section. The like is below. Prices are in HKD, divide it by approx. 7.8 to change into USD. Hope this helps.

I have looked at One World and it is always cheaper to start a RTW in NZ (including the flight to NZ). Is this the same as Canada or one of your other neighbours? Also, you will ahve a few more miles to play with.

Agree with BananaBoy. What may seem expensive at first to fly F/J is not. Nice seating, lounges, food, drinks, immigration Fast Track, noise cancelling headphones, yada yada yada all count to the whole experience. Think about what you could save on food, and hotels (ok, its late and I am scrapping the barrel here). You will also get status within the program and you will e able to use this for at least 1 year after travel. Bonus.

Case in point - my sister and I both live in Sydney, and we both went hone at the same time about 3 years ago. She went Y, I went J, even though the price difference wasn't that much. I had the lounges, showers, bed, food etc, and arrived as if I hadnt been on a plane for 24 hours. She felt every hour she was on the plane. We were on different carriers, maybe that had a bearing.

Anyway, I hope you have a great trip, and do think hard about the J/F option.

Cheers

There used to be large regional differences....

Thank you for the information all.

What is the price delta between Economy and Business? I'm definitely interested if it doesn't totally break the bank. I am 6'7" (200cm) so flying just short of 30000 miles in Y doesn't exactly make me want to run right out and do it.

Of course, I have already stated my budget for this project and I doubt that I will be able to afford anything except Y. As it is, I am stretching it to afford this.

Quoting Brons2 (Thread starter):
March 14, 2006: SIN-MEL SQ217
March 22, 2006: MEL-DEL SQ238/SQ408

I suggest you book soon, as the Commonwealth Games will be held in Melbourne 15 to 26 March 2006!
http://www.melbourne2006.com.au/

Hopefully you wont be needing accommodation, as it will be PEAK season at that time.

SQ217 offers inbound connections to MEL from India, and going out you are going to DEL, which again, will probably be a VERY busy flight.

Having said that, it is a GREAT time to be in Melbourne, and you will certainly enjoy your time here.

when I was a kid, I went to sin with my family. My dad had business there at the Hyatt, and he got to fly first class BA from JFK-LHR-SIN. But to get us over there (mom and three kids) we could only afford coach on Pan-Am. JFK-SFO-HKG-SIN. You can imagine who landed feeling chipper and who landed wanting to murder somebody...  Wink

Maybe I will modify my trip to come to MEL first and leave before the games start. I need to get the mileage down anyways a bit to get the 29,000 mile fare. Perhaps I'll skip Japan this time.

From that site:

26,000 Star-TBC OneWorld-2,999
29,000 Star-3,530 OneWorld-3,899

If I can get the trip done in 26K miles, Oneworld would clearly be the best bet...

That would mean that you would do the LAX-SYD-MEL flight with UA.
If you want to avoid UA, is the other option to travel on the NYC-SIN/BKK or LAX-SIN with SQ or TG??

of course you also have the option of travelling with Air NZ, which will have it's new J class product on SFO-AKL and LAX-AKL-MEL by then!
This is only 500 miles longer than AUS-LAX-SYD-MEL with UA, and in fact, exactly the same flight time..

10:50p LAX 7 9:40a+2 MEL I UA 839 1-Stop 744 17:50
UA 839 CHG PLANE AT SYD

11:30p LAX 2 10:20a+2 MEL I NZ 7105 1-Stop 744 17:50

Does Star offer the $0 change policy once you are en route, like SkyTeam? I think that is great. Once you have left your initial country, any further changes are based on availability only, and cost nothing, even day of departure.

Yes. In fact, only the first leg of the trip needs to be confirmed. The only time we will hurt your wallet  devil  is when you need to reroute or reissue your ticket.

I have been looking at a round the world ticket also. I was amazed at how cheap First Class is for 39,000 miles. I think it is just over $12000!!!!
Have a great time in Australia Brons2, you will love it here. (except for the fact we are a little short on water, but who needs water Smile)
