I really like the tailsection, the fuselage looks a little too boring for my eye! Would like to see a little more action going on there!

What kind of action do you mean, flyintlow?

I think, that the engines could use some color as well, but the tail does look nice indeed.

Yeah, some color to the engines may be what I am looking for. Or how about carrying those yellow and black lines of the tail across the fuselage? I guess I just don´t like the all red and white horizontal line towards the front half!

Cheers

According to the designers of the new livery, the yellow black design on the tail is supposed to represent the condor of the Andes.

I believe it looks much better on the 767-300ER than on the 757-200ER.

I am especially looking forward, however, to see the MD-83 in the new color scheme. They are the dominant type in my local airport anyways, so they're basically what we're going to see for several years to come.

The first MD-83 already painted with the new livery is N836RA, it is being overhauled with a major D check at BOG at the moment and is without engines; it is scheduled to begin revenue flights at the end of June.

It looks great, in my opinion. Kudos to the team who worked on the new livery, from a fellow graphic designer!
The only thing I'd change would be make the engines red, or maybe blue.

The new livery on the B767 is so beautiful. The AVIANCA titles are shown at is best!
But what I really do miss is the Colombian flag below the cockpit window just like on the B757.
Anyone more info on this?

Another difference between the 757 and the 767 is that the 757 has the Avianca titles just in the Windows, and the title is bigger taking into account the 757 dimensions. The 767 title is just above the windows without touching them and is smaller taking into account the 767 dimensions. I also like it more on the 767, but the 757 is still very cute for me and as Fede, I'm also waiting for the omnipresent-at-MDE MD-83.

Well, it looks black on the plane, if it's blue then it's a very dark blue. The colombian flag tone is deep blue and that looks nothing like a condor, unless they tell you it is. The design still makes the tail look decent and that's what matters  Smile

I also noticed this. On the 757 that just looks bad how the windows punch holes on the titles. Also could be because on the 767 the red area seems proportionately bigger for some reason although it's pretty much the same.

The livery looks good side on, however the 2nd pic, I don't like how it looks on the 3/4 front perspective. That's what I dislike about non-symmetric desigs like these.

I would use the white space between the red and the tail, just above the windows and put the "Colombia" titles in bold black lettering. I'd leave the engines white as they go with the overall design which is white at the bottom.

You will only see the Colombia sign on the aft white part behind the aft doors in grey color, and the condors color is navy blue.

You will not see the yellow blue red colors of the Colombian flag idea anymore since as of February 28, 2005 the airlines name was changed from Aerovias Nacionales de Colombia to Aerovias del Continente Americano or Airways of the American Continent.

How long had the grey clourscheme been around...didn't seem that long? For instance, N421AV seems to have only been repainted to the grey scheme around April 02 looking at the data base.

Must be costing a great deal to be doing a new scheme again. Was the last scheme a flop for it to be replaced so soon? Obviosuly must be financially sound to be doing this major exercise twice in 3 years. Have any other airlines changed their livery completely in less time I wonder?

The last scheme (grey) was Alianza Summa which is no more so that's one reason for the change.

The story behind the grey scheme is something Avianca and most of us Colombians want to leave behind: The Alianza Summa and what came with it, including the bankruptcy of Aces (yes, I know they had problems long before but Alianza Summa reminds people precisely of that, and of a time that wasn't precisely the best for Colombian Aviation)

Right. The old colorscheme, better-known as the Summa livery, was around for a bit less than 3 years.

Though, true-to-be, it seemed like ages. The old colorscheme was initially set to represent the union of Colombia's three main carriers, which in early 2002 gathered around one unique alliance in order to join efforts and survive to one of aviation's most difficult times.

While the airlines never merged completely, they publicly appeared under one big umbrella. They began applying the butterfly and grey to all aircraft immediately after creating the group. If you check the database for photographs of either airline [Avianca, Aces or Sam] you'll noticed that all planes wore exactly the same scheme.

To make a long story short, the Alianza Summa [Summa Alliance] didn't work out as expected, and member companies were already well down the sink since the very moment they entered the alliance. So, things started wrong, and ended worse. Aces shut down business in late 2003, and once-admired alliance got cancelled November of 2003, leaving its disaster and awful public image behind, as said by 757MDE above.

Fortunately, now AV stands as a profitable airline under a new owner, and this new image, even if it seems to fast for an image change, was desperately needed to change how the company appeared in front of the people's eye. Most of the fleet, unfortunately, still wears the Summa scheme, and will remain as such for at least another 2 years.

I'm not quite sure, but once you made this question, the word Delta instantly crossed my mind.  Wink

I like the new livery of Avianca. The red reminds me of the old livery, very good to see that coming back. Hopefully I will see the MD83 wearing the new colours soon in Curaçao Big grin

Thanks for the reminder of the history. Must say, I was a little ignorant to this phase of Colombian aviation history.

Glad Avianca has come out a stronger player at the end and I think the new livery is great. Agree, perhaps some colour on the engines would be good.

Wonder when we'll see Avianca back in London?

I certainly hope so!
With BA quitting BOG, AV should take advantage of the potential for traffic to Colombia and onward connections to Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Argentina and Chile and Venezuela.

As I undestand it, market research is being currently being carried out to evaluate the route potential. Avianca's new owner has mentioned London and LAX in the aim for new routes. It has already applied for the rights to the latter. I trust that LON will follow.
