Emergency At PHL Now?

Mon Jun 06, 2005 11:12 am

At 10:05 EST, I saw some type of jet fly over pretty low with its to white lights on the wings flashing slowly, like one would turn on as the other one turned off. I couldn't make out the aircraft type or airline but I never seen anything like that. Does anybody know if something is going on?

Yep, many Southwest 737s have alternating flashing landing lights. Its designed to increase visibility. Some biz jets also have these types of landing lights as well. I saw at least 1 WN bird with them last Sunday at PHL myself.

This is done very often on almost all types of aircraft. It's called "oscillation" and is perfectly normal, especially in lower visability when one really needs to be seen.

Sounds like WN 737s. Trust me, I lived on the westerly approach path at DAL. At first I was like, WTF? But yeah, most of the newer WN planes have this feature.

Its a 'flash to pass' operation that PHL has developed for the 27R and 35 arrivals. The [flashing] aircraft was merely letting the arrival on 35 pass in front of him at the intersection.  yes
Caution wake turbulence, you are following a heavy jet.

Some helicopters in operation up and down the East River here in NYC also use oscillation, as do many railroads on the similarly-arranged "ditch lights" on the front of their locomotives (CSX comes to mind). In all cases, it's to increase the chances that the vehicle will be seen by someone who should see it.

Thanks guys! I never seen anything like it before, so I thought there might of been an emergency.
