RAF Tornado Doing An Escort?

Wed Jun 08, 2005 4:38 am

Hi all,

Have heard that an RAF tornado has this evening escorted a Thomsonfly B737 from CVT to somewhere, probably STN.

Anyone have any news of it?

I saw the Tornado go over my house towards CVT and called up a mate who works up there, he said he too saw it and it was doing an escort for this TOM B737.

So guys, what do we have here then?

Cheers all,

LM

Yep, Have just heard that a suspect package which no-one could account for was found.

Nothing more as yet.

I was at STN catching some departures when it happened. I wasn't in a position to get a decent shot of the TOM 737, but I did take a heavily zoomed one with the sun on the wrong side through the fence as it vacated 05. Seeing the Tornados above was pretty unnerving.

From the time stamp on my camera, the TOM 737 landed at 1949 and there wasn't a single movement afterwards until 2007

Sorry I couldn't get a better shot:

Safely on the ground, with the passengers being bussed away. The area was cleared shortly after, in case they needed to perform a "contolled explosion". The Torndaos were cool, but sadly no picture. Sorry!

Saw a clip of it on the news.

I just love the news. They were showing a very nice looking FED EX plane being loaded, with a quick shot of a Air2000 plane landing on a runway, followed by a Ryanair taking off. Not oneclip of the plane being mentuioned in the story AT ALL
Where does the time go???

Can someone explain to me what the point is of scrambling an RAF plane to "escort" the plane down? I'm sure there is a reason I just can seem to fathom it myself at the moment. Is it purely for show or does it have some practical purpose? Maybe in case the pilot suddenly tries to fly into central London I guess the plane could be shot down.

Does anyone know what orders are given to the RAF pilots or indeed the airforces from other countries when they do this sort of thing?

No it does not figure.

The pilot must know where STN is.

As Prune says, it would make sense for a hijacking. STN seems to be the first preference for divertion, it may be easy to contain.

According to the BBC, it turned out to be a mobile, what did they think that it was?.
