777 Celebrates 10 Years Of Revenue Service

Wed Jun 08, 2005 8:07 am

Ten years ago, on June 7, 1995, the first 777 revenue flight, UA 921 LHR to IAD was operated with N777UA. There were also two other domestic revenue flights that day (on N766UA and N767UA).

Happy anniversary , 777 !

Here's a recent pic of the birthday girl. Does anyone know where she was flying today ?

Falls on my birthday, something I have always been happy to associate with.

Remembering being in ORD and seeing the banners near the beginning of service.

10 years ago.....wow, I was 12 then.....

That picture shows the 772 non-ER in Frankfurt.

What is the range difference between the 772A and 772ER?

Geez.. ten years already. I remember when it was just an idea. I loved it when it was just drawings, and I love it still. Congrats to Boeing and the T7.

Anyone else have a "Boeing 777 Team' hat?

My Uncle passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer on that same day-June 7, 1995; He never boarded a plane his entire life. I was in Keflavik at the time, the United Flight flew close to us in Iceland.

Why was the first flight from LHR to IAD, and not IAD to LHR?

My guess is because the flight was a public-relations event, both for Boeing and United. It would have been better to have the focus of attention to be a daytime flight, so the invitees/press are awake during the flight. LHR to IAD fits this objective. The arrival of the flight in IAD would make the evening newscasts on television and be reported in the morning newspapers.

Though, in 1970, the first 747 revenue flight (on Panam) was JFK to LHR.

I had the unique opportunity to see N777UA the day United actually took delivery of her in PDX, on Monday, 5/15/95...the day after I graduated from Willamette University in Salem, OR. Today, I live not 2 miles from where she was built, at PAE.

She left PAE or BFI that morning, flew up to YVR, and then down to PDX and parked on E5. I saw her from the terminal level and it looked ENORMOUS, and then my dad (lead mechanic for UA in PDX at the time) took me downstairs and we walked around the aircraft, and distinctly remember the "bigfoot" with six wheels on the main bogie. An AMAZING airplane! It wasn't until July 26th last year that I flew on my first 777, from LHR to ORD on #949.

I saw N777UA at IAD on my birthday last year, being prepped for #920 to LHR. I was on 916 heading to FRA that day.

Well, I wish Boeing would apply some new technology of 787s on their 777s to make them lighter and perhaps 777s will be still flying (see orders) in the next ten years or even longer...

With the competition increasing between A & B I wonder how long a life planes would have in production today. The 330 cannot be much older than the T7 and has already been (more or less) pushed out of the market by the 787 even if it in its day was a very good plane. Now the very same thing might well happen to the T7 because of the 350 - even if it (like what might happen to the 747 if we are very optimistic indeed and what has happened to the A300) could keep going for some time as an F-plane.

Personally I do not believe it is a bad thing that competition promotes innovation and improvements. It will help keep travel expenses affordable for all of us!

yeah well, perhaps it is correct to some customers regarding 777-200ER but I do not see it a case for 777-200LR, which is still not-competable. So if Boeing could make it even lighter (with composites,) it would be a plane for the next decades.

I love that UA has N777UA in new colors. I am very disappointed that her name was removed for that new paint. To me she will always be "Working Together." I've flown her twice, once IAD-CDG, and again SFO-ORD.

BTW Working Together and I share anniversaries, she started work 6-7-95 I started four years later 6-7-99. She's got 4 years senority on me.

Thanks for reminding us how our lives are racing by!

I remember going to LHR to see one of the first T7 arrivals and hearing the excitement in the ATC's voice when the pilot announced himself as a T7!

Good on the 777. Magnificent jet.

My favourite 777 variant has to be the 773. Long and elegant with those hanging triple bogies.

10 years of excellent service.
Now over 500 flying around
718 on order(Including AC, AF, and AI deal)
Do you think it will get over 1000 orders, I sure hope so.
If the 772LR gets 170 orders, the 772LRF 130 orders they're already over 1000. And I'm sure the 773ER will also get at least 250 more. The 772A/773A/772ER can also get another 50. It would then have over 1300 orders! Let's hope in 10+ years, a 777NG or something similar will be launched, those huge engines just look awesome on the B777!

Cheers, Konstantin G.

Happy 10th 777!

I am proud to say that I had a piece of the cake at the gate on June 7th for the LHR-IAD flight. An exciting time to see the first revenue flight take off from the US.

Here are my 777 flights:

IAD-LHR (twice)
LHR-IAD (twice)
LGW-EWR
IAD-ORD
IAD-DEN
ORD-PEK (twice)
PEK-ORD (twice)
IAD-NRT

and this summer:
IAD-FRA and FRA-IAD

Way to go 777!

I'll never forget working in the Central Pacific for three years and then moved to Thailand. After taking a 738 from PNI to GUM and then MNL, I had to spend the night at MNL while the sparkling SQ 777 was waiting to take me the next morning to Singapore. It was as much if not alot more than what I expected. Beautiful, spacious, clean cabin (oh and the F/As - but that has nothing to do with the A/c  Smile) we had to pause for another plane to land before we took off, and I could swear the plane was bouncing slightly up and down wanting to get airborn. The flight was full, but the takeoff was short and we shot up and were on our way to a great 3 hour flight to SIN. Very smooth landing - Now that is a great airplane!! I can't wait to fly another one.

I remember seeing interviews on TV that day with people who flew on it and seeing it taking off and taxing, just an awesome sight! I had to wait a few more months for my first 777 flight on 9Sep95.

My favorite. The most beautiful airliner in the sky--a perfect blend of elegance, efficiency, and muscle.

IIRC, one was in YWG for cold weather testing, and during development some work was done at the Boeing Winnipeg Division Quality Policy as well. Alas, I have yet to see one of these birds in person, although I'm sure I've seen some cruising overhead. YWG is very remote when it comes to widebodies. crying

Other pilots at LHR also noticed the brand new aircraft on the day of the first flight. Karl Sabbagh, in "21st Century Jet", tells us that while N777UA was waiting in sequence on a taxiway for that first flight at LHR, someone in the cockpit of one of the other waiting aircraft commented on ground frequency "Nice pair of engines, United". Those PW4077s were definitely huge for the time.

It's been 10 years already? I love the 777, it's my favorite widebody to fly in. The sense of space in that cabin is hard to beat. I've only flown on AA's 777s, I hope I get to try it out with other airlines soon.

Go 777!

10 years, 500 jets, no accident. No one beats that so far. Truly a great product.

Luckily the 777 hasn´t has escaped its share of incidental bad luck that befalls everyone and everything sooner or later. No terrorism, no weather desaster, no hijack, no ATC mistake, no pilot error, one of which which has befallen every airplane-type on this planet already at least.

I think SQ has at least 58 in service, which would be the largest number.
United has 52 (of the 60 delivered to them) in service

[EDIT: Per planespotters.net, top five are: SQ (58), UA (52), AA (45), BA (43), AF (35) ]

Happy birthday to the 777 dont mind that i travelled on the A340 before a 777 but I hope to rectify that soon. Interms of the lastest generation of wide bodies the 777 is the most elegant plane of them all. (Note the 747 is and has to be in a class by her self).

Thu Jun 09, 2005 5:47 am

I too am a big fan of the 777. I've had the pleasue of flying on them numerous times, including:

ORD-LHR - UAL
LHR-DXB - EK
DXB-DOH - EK
AUH-LHR - BA
LGW-DFW - BA

The longest route I've flown was on BA, we were on the 777-200 from Gatwick to DFW... it was around 11.5 hours with weather and taxi delays.

On the opposite end of the scale I've flown on what must be the shortest scheduled 777 flight, from Dubai to Doha on EK. This is a visa run flight, and in 2001 and 2002 they used the 777's every Tuesday to handle the large amount of freight bound for Doha. Needless to say - I always went on my visa runs on Tuesdays! That flight was between 20 and 25 minutes each way!
