HP To Hawaii Announced

Wed Jun 08, 2005 6:06 pm

Merger or not, HP announces flights to Hawaii ...
http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2005/Jun/07/bz/bz10p.html

And their 752s may not be ETOPS certified, much less flight and cabin crews(?)

The Arizona-based airline has begun training crews and is awaiting approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to make the flights,

Sounds like it may be ETOPS certification.

That is not all that hard

Nope, they aren't, so they need to buy some and maintain them to the standard (something HP does not have a great past for) or get theirs done right quick

PHX HNL should be a good service.

The LAS service may hurt HA and Aloha a bit. They both depend on that destination, as LAS is the number one vacation destination for Hawaiians. And with Aloha only connected to LAS in SFO...

How much the HP entry into the Hawaii market from LAS, will depend on how many flights HP intends to have once service is established. LAS is served by HA, AQ, X9, and TZ all with non-stops.

It will somehow affect the code-share that HA has with HP with the PHX flights. TZ and HA both have a flight to PHX, AQ canceled that route.

I guess we will see what pans out in the coming months.

This will be a great link if they can connect some of the larger US stations in the east with PHX. SDF (always my favorite to talk about) is one that comes to mind as not having service to PHX on HP. We do have service to PHX on WN, but it's not my favorite as US has alwasy been my airline of choice.

I guess we'll all sit back and wait to see where the flights and routes fall out.

Cheers,
John

US Airways' 757s are already EOW equipped. May not take much to get them ETOPS ready.

Will they offer a better inflight product [ie full meal service, etc.] or will it be like their transcon service where you have to buy a snack?

They will be certifying their own 757s though as they were in the process of planning Hawaii flights prior to this merger talk--plus in the event that the merger falls through they plan on still flying the routes. Hopefully they have some type of service enhancements.

Considering HP's 757's are some of the oldest out there (ex-EA) , I wonder what will be involved in making them ETOPS certified ?

Vegas actually has a large Hawaiian population and there are loads of Hawaiians who come here to vacation. That Omni DC-10 is chartered by The Boyd Group (Sam’s Town, Cal, Fremont, and others). Go to the Cal – that place is little Hawaii inside.

I posted this topic on 5/31. Regardless, nice to see people interested.

With or without the merger with US, HP plans on serving Hawaii from both PHX and LAS in 2006.

http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepu...usiness/articles/0531hawaii31.html

They also plan on flying to KOA and LIH. Will HP use 752s of their own or the 752s and 762s from US? I doubt they'll use the A332s. LIH is 752 worthy, but KOA can handle heavier aircraft. TZ has increased service to OGG and HNL from PHX on 753s, so maybe fares will drop when US (or HP?) enters the market.

If I recall correctly, HP flew daily PHX-HNL for years with the 747, along with some LAS-HNL flights that were flown at the end before stopping service to HNL altogether by Northwest DC-10's and flight crew that were wet-leased... The NGO route was sold to NWA, which still flies it today (from DTW and NRT). I worked for HP during this time and flew the PHX-HNL route a few times.... HP was also in the process of ETOPS certifying their 757's in 1992-93, but quit the process due to $ constraints before they were done..

How will HP fly to all of the proposed Hawaii destinations with only a subfleet of 3 ETOPS 757 aircraft? Wouldn't it take more than that for substantial daily service?

HP flew both PHX and LAS nonstop to HNL on 747s. Sometimes the HNL-LAS flight would continue on to PHX and vice versa. On a Vegas trip in 1990, I flew home on the big bird and it was the shortest 747 flight I ever had. For a short time, HP had 747 service to JFK from PHX. This was short lived since they only had three or four 747s and they had to get them them to HNL and NGO, so if there were delays in JFK, the HNL pax in PHX and LAS had their vacations delayed. The NGO from HNL service didn't do well either.

TZ just lost the Pleasant Holidays contract. So PHX-HNL is just going to get tougher for them.

This is true- when the Gulf War started, there was rumour of an HP 747 NGO-HNL flight with 1 pax on board.... Don't know if it is true, but would like to know from an old crew member... The NWA NGO route does well- always full when I have worked them..

Well, i dont know about this one. HP used to fly this route, and it didnt work, we'll see i guess.

Another thought, is maybe someone at HP has the inside scoop from WN. becuase if you recall, WN is in the process of ETOPS certifying(spelling?) their 73Gs. Hum? Maybe this is competition. If HP starts the route first, they would have the upper hand on WN. Talk about strategy. Would be nice to see WN/HP go head to head on some new HI routes. WN has to be ready to rid itself of TZ sooner or later.

WN is not in the process of ETOPS its fleet. What SWA is doing is over water equipping its aircraft to allow for more direct routings particularly across the Gulf and up/down the East Coast.

Actually, of all routes, PHX-HNL will not be as difficult, because it is one of the WN codeshare connecting cities

It will do just fine. Actually when we flew to HNL back in the late 80's/early 90's...the HNL run did very well. It was just a bad time for us (and several other carriers). Also the choice of aircraft wasn't the best...too big and expensive to operate.

I think HP will make a healthy return on these Hawaii flights--the 757 is the perfect aircraft for them. I just hate to see that this may mean a lot of the 757s will be pulled off of other flights--namely the IAH runs--I enjoy seeing those colorful birds at Terminal A.
