Northwest To Begin Nonstop Service From MEM To CAE

Thu Jun 09, 2005 12:02 am

The following is an article announcing new service for Columbia, SC (CAE) from Memphis:

"MINNEAPOLIS -- Northwest Airlines today announced new nonstop jet service between its hub at Memphis and Columbia, S.C. two daily flights will be offered beginning Oct. 2.
"This new service provides additional air service options for local travelers as well as visitors to South Carolina's Capital Region," said Tom Bach, vice president of market planning and Airlink. "Customers traveling through our hassle-free Memphis hub will enjoy convenient connections to destinations throughout the United States, Canada and Europe."

The additional service to the Columbia Metropolitan Airport will complement three daily flights Northwest currently offers between Columbia and its WorldGateway hub at Detroit.

"Northwest continues to provide South Carolinians with great opportunities in air travel," said Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC). "And I'm particularly thrilled that these new flights will encourage more people to visit the Midlands."

The new flight will be operated by Northwest Airlink partner, Pinnacle Airlines Corp., using its Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ), which seats up to 50 passengers.

The new flights will bring to 94 the number of destinations served nonstop from Memphis.

Northwest's new service will be available for sale on Saturday, June 11 at http://www.nwa.com [or by telephoning Northwest Airlines reservations or your local travel agent.]

Memphis may be the smallest hub for any airport in the US but NWA keeps adding the flights. Go Memphis!

Hmm, for a supposed Pinnacle pilot, one would think you should know better, B757capt. It seems you have overhauled your profile yet again. What happened to being a CRJ pilot?

LambertMan-B757Capt,

The only place it has ever been written anywhere that MEM was on the "chopping block" or being phased out was on this forum. Things speculated on this forum seem to take on a life of their own until they become
virtual fact.

Ive always wondered what benefits MEM has for NW. Are there a lot of markets you can only get to through memphis?

It's about time Northwest did something to give Delta a run for their money in the Southeast U.S.. Seeing that Delta isn't exactly the picture of health of late, now is the perfect time to leverage greater market share out of small to mid-sized markets such as Columbia.

Since it's obvious that Memphis is good for only so much O&D, it makes sense to increase their city-pair offerings through a relatively congestion/delay-free airport.

What is that old saying...popular in the good ol' days of Delta..."Even if you're going to hell, you will have to change planes in Atlanta" (??) or something to that effect.

Now if they would only work on how they price fares originating/terminating in Memphis; they might even see a bump there as well.

Would be nice, but why should they when they have no competition?

Right on the nail.

It's interesting a Pinnacle Pilot would use the term "northworst" for the airline he flies for.

They actually have added some out of MEM; MEM-CAE, upgrades on MEM-OMA, additional flight on MEM-DSM, etc.

I'm very skeptical that he's an airline pilot. He list's himself as a Airport Ops Manager, in the 21-25 age group. Hrrrmmmmm

I agree. Whenever I fly out west, I always enjoy connecting from RDU into MEM. I much prefer changing in Memphis as opposed to DTW or MSP. Granted the flights out of MEM are on smaller aircraft - for example: a 320 to LAX versus a 757-300, but still the reduced agitation at a smaller, SOUTHERN hub makes the entire changing aircraft, running 74 gates in 30 minutes, etc worthwhile.

NW has upgraded some LIT-MEM flights from DC-9-30s to DC-9-50/319/320's. In the past few months.

This doesn't have much to do w/ the new CAE service, but the best part about MEM is the barbeque. The airport is just permeated with that smell.

It always makes me laugh when nearly every press release about new service to a city includes some bullshit blurb from either a member of the Senate or the House delegation.

To be fair, perhaps they should also have to put their names on service cutbacks too!

NW Airlink will start service from Memphis to Columbia using a couple of mountie jets a day...hmmm....I really can't think of a less newsworthy item. This is less capacity than one DC-9. Oh well, post on folks.

Sorry but RJs are about all thats added to MEM of late. Crow what we can.

KcrwFlyer

Actually you just named it. What Memphis has is that it's NOT DTW or MSP

It was just posted in house that MEM is adding 18 permanent agents not the usual summer temps.

Well considering that I'll be flying GSP-DTW-SFO-MEM-GSP in a few days perhaps our paths will cross.

GSP-DTW and MEM-GSP are both on mountie jets. Big grin

Mounties = Canadian. CRJ = Canadian.

I'm sure this will do well... if NWA didn't see potential, they wouldn't do it. They're smart by going forward with a CRJ and not a DC9 despite the cries from the mainline employees. These are 2 more CRJs that will feed the mainline flights at MEM.
