BMI - New A319, 1 A321 Gone

Thu Jun 09, 2005 7:16 pm

Hi,
Just looked at airfleets, and it says BMI have had their 6th A319 delivered (good news - I love that livery on the 319), but now 1 of their 321's has gone to THY. there are 2 321's in THY's fleet that were previously BMI's now, and I wondered whether the 320's or 319's would fill in for one of the 321's slots?
BMI's short-haul fleet looks like this now:
319 6
320 12
321 8

a nice tidy fleet methinks!
I came. I saw. I conquered

Will anymore A321s be leaving the fleet?

Seems they are finally being sensible and realigning the capacity to a more realistic level.

Several more A319s due next year, will result in further fleet roll-overs with A321s.

The A321s are a little too big for BMI's needs and therefore BMI is downsizing its A32X fleet a bit, swapping A321s for new A319s. When BMI replaced their 737-2nd generation fleet with a mix of A320/321 aircraft, they added many seats on a per aircraft basis - a move they are slowly correcting at this point in time.

This is really ironic!!!

IIRC, bmi went Airbus since Boeing was not offering a plane the size of the A321 at the time and bmi wanted A321-like capacity. The loss of the bmi campaign prompted Boeing to rethink their strategy and offer the B737-900 to airlines.

And now they are getting rid of them...  Sad

A321s 'DA and 'DF are the two that have gone so far - both to Turkish Air

Whenever I have had the misfortune of flying the 321 MAN-LHR it has always been chocka block full to capacity and I have been offered cash at check-in to catch the later flight.

I think the 321 capacity is needed on busy routes/timings!

Same story for me, the few times I've flown on an A321 GLA-LHR.

Their DUB service is rarely 100% full these days - Loads usually in the mid 80's = high density A320.
You are 100 times more likely to catch a cold on a flight than an average person!
