CO EWR-HAM Service Begins Today.

Fri Jun 10, 2005 5:58 am

CO74 will land HAM morning of 6/10 for first time. 752 with winglets, came into EWR from LAX today, departing EWR soon for HAM, if previous thread re: winglets is still accurate. Any spotters planning to take pics?

Not sure (as I don't have access to that information), but this thread indicated it would be.

looks like it's turning right around at EWR and back to HAM tomorrow too.

Excellent Big grin . In that cas I might try to hit the plane on Saturday. Btw, this is the first nonstop flight to the US in over 6 years, ever since DL pulled HAM-ATL in February 1999.

I am still amazed that a 752 can fly for almost 9 hours. the return from HAM is 8:40.
I never thought that the 757s had that range.
Are those 757s using a different engine or additional fuel tanks?

All they need is to add is PTV to make this trip more bearable.

I'm on the return flight (CO75) on August 2. I sure hope it can go that far!

And my guess is the flight time is 8:00, with 20 minutes on each end for taxiing, etc.

CO employees on this site have indicated equipping 752BF planes with PTVs in economy is a high priority. They also need power ports! You listening CO? how can they not have powerports on such a long flight?

I'm in the BF cabin on CO75, and they do have PTVs, though with fewer channels than the 767/777 system. As long as they have one good movie and some CSI, I'll be happy enough.

Just came back from the airport...

N67134 landed 7:35 a.m. on runway 23, took off again 9:25 a.m. on runway 33... I tool a lots of pics, but I'm right now in the office, so no chance for an upload, sorry...

Strange thing, they gave the water cannon salute for the outbound flight, isn't it usually the other way around?

The weather was not that nice, but felt good to watch the inaugural flight... Hope for good weather tomorrow so that I can get her in some nicer light...

Cheers from Hamburg

The 752 has more range than most of us realize - LADECO used 752s on the MIA-SCL route for years which is even longer than most transatlantic services...CO does have rather advanced 757-200s, which are ETOPS and the Hamburg route is using winglet equipped aircraft, which adds a few hundred miles in range, but otherwise the CO 757s are standard build aircraft.

No PTVS in Y, PTVs are installed in the BF cabin.

Yes, about 8 hours will be the flying time, CO pads the flight times due to congestion and ground time at EWR. I flew one BRU-EWR segment with a 757 (this was about 3 years ago during the period that CO was using the 757 on BRU-EWR) and due to winds, we were in the air 9 hours 15 minutes. A very long flight.

Powerports are coming. An AVOD PTV system is being studied, it costs lots of money so time will tell if it actually happens for the 752. Lets just say its a definite maybe at the time being.

Do get ready for 3 espisodes of CSI (one each of CSI, CSI-Miami,CSI-NY) plus 3 episodes of the Practice - both channels are on the 757 BF system as well as all 767/777 flights.

2 thoughts about it:
- Flying north-south is less prone to punishing headwinds
- It is also possible to "buy" some range by applying load-restrictions

Btw: Whats the distance MIA - SCL
-HT

EDIT EDIT: Just made a quick and rater rough calculation using the map on my office wall: MIA - SCL approx 6500 km / 4040 mi / 3510 nm ?

It is hard to believe that such a capable plane is no longer in production. It seems it has been resurrected now with new uses, but is impossible to get new ones. It guess the market value of the used 757s has increased.

HAM is a very modern facility and has the newest terminal in Germany. To give a short summary, we have 2 terminals (opened in 1994 and 2005, respectively), with a pier directly adjacent to them, with a total of 17 jetways. We offer 10,000 car parking positions, including 2,200 on the newly-opened rotunda. The airport is still set to receive another 2,000 by later this year, a train connection to downtown in 2007, an airside shopping mall and a new airport hotel. Airside-wise, we have two crossing runways (05/33 and 15/33) and some 40 apron parking positions, with many of them only for regional planes though. Besides CO, we only recently finally got a link to Canada again, with Air Transat operating a weekly A310 flight to YYZ, and EK is set to come to HAM in october, providing they have enough planes. More info about HAM can be found here:

With CO having the monoploy route to the USA, will HAM officials court AA/DL for ORD/JFK service? Is there a market for more north atlantic flying?

Doubt they would try to get AA/DL to restart flights to HAM, given their success in getting CO to HAM. Even if they tried to persuade those airlines, it is doubtful either one would come to Hamburg again. AA used to operate a flight to ORD over a decade ago, which I believe didn't last very well to beging with, and AA has traditionally a bit held back when it comes to flying to Germany, with service solely to FRA.
About DL, you can be assured that HAM officials tried to get the airline back that at a time provided them with service to both JFK and ATL, and later only ATL. But if Delta saw that a market was there, they would have relaunched HAM service years ago, which they haven't. Last time DL flew to HAM, loads were average in coach, but Business was empty. Especially towards the end of service, loads were deteriorating. I remember a flight back from ATL on January 4th, at the end of the christmas holiday, when flights are usually full with families returning in time to get their kids back to school. Coach only had 90 seats filled out of 147 (at most), and in the 48 seats in BusinessElite, there were maybe 10 people besides us. Not really a profitable flight. So, even if DL has reduced BusinessElite by 12 seats, it is still doubtful DL could manage to profitably operate a flight to ATL again. No JFK, as NYC is well-enough covered by the new CO flight.

I don't know why it stopped...it was and still is a high demand aircraft...I mean look at what CO is doing, look at US's uses for its 757s and look at song! I wish the 3 of them would all meet up with Boeing and get the program started again... The good news for CO is they can use the 787 for the same purpose...but in reality, there is no other plane like the 757 around.

they nearly ZERO orders, and they likely asked around and didn't see many coming.

My guess is between the 783 and the new 739x, it made little sense even if orders might trickle in.

With 1050 757s built, there are lots out there, but to really sell the idea of a 783 and a 739x, you need to create artificial scarcity of existing options.

In addition, airlines that use 752s and 73x models would easily be able to bring 739x models into the fleet for domestic duty and move their 752 to international and altitude duty where it would remain financially viable, while the new plane would be better on fuel for shorter more frequent flights.

And the 753 makes little sense in a world of the 783. It made little sense to most carriers anyway (hard to load, not great range or cargo). But the 753 is a great tourist/charter style aircraft.

What should I expect in terms of wait?

And what shouldn't I miss in Hamburg (the city) when I am there?

If you're staying at the Radisson, you have two option to go to the airport.
Option 1 would be a cab ride, which would cost some €25, and can take up to 40 minutes, depending on traffic on the streets
Option 2 would be going by train from Dammtor station nearby and take the S1 to Poppenbüttel. At Ohlsdorf, you'd have to take Bus line 110 to the airport. Price would be some €5-7. Time would be roughly 40 minutes as well. Subway would be a bit faster, but at that early time it is usually too packed.

Quoting Ikramerica (Reply 22):

Trains run every 5-10 minutes usually. Cabs can be found a plenty in front of Dammtor station, just 3 minutes from the Radisson.

There's alot of thinks.
First, there is of course a visit to the port, which should include a boat tour, as well as to the "Harbor City", the newest district of Hamburg.
Then there are the old churches, especially the "Michel", as well as the city hall. The downtown area is a must visit in total, and you should also go to the "Alster".
Then there's also Airbus on the other side of the river  Wink .
Other things that would be worth a visit is the Color Line Arena and the AOL Arena, our "Stadtpark" (a scaled down version of teh Central Park Big grin ).

Thanks. With luggage, sounds like a taxi will be a good idea and not very expensive as airport taxis go. Most other cities you pay twice that much to 5 times that much to get to an airport 40 min away.

If my flight is 9:15am and I am business class, I assume boarding would start around 8:30am, so what's a safe arrival time at the airport at that time of day to clear security and such? (check-in should be quick at CO for business first). Is 1/2 hour enough time to get through security? If I leave at 7:00am from the hotel, would that seem safe?

Thanks

That should be enough. The CO flight is departing at a rather quite time, after the early-morning exodus of charter carriers and Lufthansa. Plus, the advantage is that CO is in the new terminal 1, free of all the Lufthansa passengers checking in. There is a total of not more than 10 flights that depart between 8 and 10am, so therefore security should also be fairly empty, and could be passed in less than 15 minutes probably. So, leaving the hotel at 7am leaves you enough time to get to the plane relaxed.

One question for one of the US guys...

Anyone know why CO74 EWR-HAM had so much time delay the last two days? Is there anything going on at EWR that turns out in delay...

June 11th, Scheduled departure 6.00 pm, departure was at 7.37 p.m.

Would nice if some can clear this up...

Thanks in advance

Check out the Kunsthalle - fantastic modern art museum. And ask people if Rote Flora is still the place to go - haven't been in a couple of years but it was a really fun night back then.  bouncy  For that matter, the whole of the Schanzensviertel (sp?), the bohemian neighbourhood, is a lot of fun. Good shopping there and in the city centre too.

I don't know how long you haven't been in Hamburg, but the Schanze is a district to be avoided at all costs. You have lots of Albanian people there, and the only Germans there are the ones using the Rote Flora to get their drugs, and coordinate demonstrations that always result in violence and damages in the range of several thousands of Euros.

OT:How long have you not been in the Schanze? IMO it's one of the most interesting and diverse districts in Hamburg and should be on every visitors agenda . Furthermore it's not any more unsafe than Reeperbahn. There are a number of excellent bars and clubs that attract all kinds of people, from punks to yuppies, what makes for the special atmosphere!

Anyway, great CO is flying to HAM. Can we expect any special fares ex HAM?

Roughly a week or so. They have great bars, so what? There other districts that also offer great bars and restaurants (City, Bahrenfeld, St. Pauli, etc), which can considered way safer. And you can't really compare the Schanze to the Reeperbahn, because the Reeperbahn has always been a district full of criminals, hoes and pimps. It was the arrival of the Albanians and other criminal South Europeans that ruined both the Schanze and the Reeperbahn. Also, all those people at the Rote Flora, who are so "against the system", also used to be less violent than they are nowadays. It is just not the same anymore.

Quoting DAL767400ER (Reply 37):
It was the arrival of the Albanians and other criminal South Europeans that ruined both the Schanze and the Reeperbahn.

I do not appreciate that remark, DAL767. It is very stereotypical and racist. If you have something against Albanians, keep it to yourself.

As long as you do not experience it yourself, don't go around calling others racist.
Regardless of what you think, Albanians have a dark history when it comes to teh Reeperbahn. I'm not saying that all Albanians (or other South Europeans) are criminal, but on the Reeperbahn the criminal percentage is about thrice the number of the friendly guys. I invite you to come and see it for yourself before you judge me again.

He said "Criminal South Europeans". He didn't imply all South Europeans were bad, merely that the ones that settled in those neighborhoods were "criminal"
What now?
