Sat Jun 11, 2005 4:32 am

According to this article (sorry, portuguese only), Portugalia's president says that he'll be working towards Portugalia's entrance into Sky Team by the end of 2005. Read the very last paragraph.

I assume that means that they'll have to stop code sharing with TAP?

A (bad) translation of the article (courtesy Google):

"TAP and Portugália already are not [going to merge], confirmed the president of the Portugália, in interview to the TSF. Ribeiro João of the Fonseca, that did not want to speak on the reasons of falhanço of the business, advanced, however, that the negotiation time was too much long.

(09:10/08 of June 05)

The TAP and the Portugália had not arrived at an agreement for the the two [merging], disclosed the president of the Portugália, in interview to the TSF.

"This negotiation had its time and was made. It did not lead to a positive result in the direction of the parts to arrive at an agreement, and the negotiations had been given as locked up ", explained Ribeiro João of the Fonseca, that was favorable to aerial the the two junction of company.

In the interview that granted to the TSF and passes in complete in the sunday in the program "the Accounts of Head", the president of the Portugália did not want to speak on the reasons that they had led to falhanço of the business, therefore that to make she would have it to express "personal opinions on people, what does not interest".

"The reality is that the men who had passed for the process had not obtained to execute this strategical vision. This is that it is in history. An entity does not have justification to walk has one year to speak daily on the negotiations to buy another company ", continued.

Ribeiro João of the Fonseca said exactly that this situation "was not good for nobody". "the people had to be more been silent, to have more hide and to be respected more", added.

The responsible maximum of the Portugália now wants to make to enter its company in the alliance Sky Team until the final o of 2005, counting to still sign during this month of June a voos agreement of allotment with Alitalia Italian."

Sound like they are giving up on TAP. That is the main thrust of the article.

CO's already has nonstop EWR-LIS service, so that lays a nice foundation.

This actually may be an early sign for TAP-Portugal to get its act together and negotiate with Portugalia for a solution. If a merger between Tap and Portugalia does not materialize, than Tap will be in a disadvantaged position to combat, the ever growing Low Cost Companies and the superior service provided by PGA- Portugalia.
