Biggest US Cargo-Airline Besides UPS And FedEx?

Sat Jun 11, 2005 7:48 am

Hi,
I wonder what the biggest US-Cargo-airline is (except UPS and FedEx). Polar? BAX? Kalitta? Evergreen?

(Love them all with their "geriatric"-fleets!)
Wish I could fly with one of them one day!

Bye

How do you define largest? Aircraft in fleet, or revenue ton miles?

UPS and FedEx argued in court that DHL was majority owned by the German Postal Service...does that make them a German company? If so, how about Atlas, the holding company for Atlas and Polar?

And what about the others? Are there, too, 6 Cargo-"big ones" like the 6 "big passenger carriers" in the States?

FEDEX all the way . I know you said except FEDEX or UPS! Just had to say that. Fedex is adding on here at IND big time. IND will be the biggest HUB for Fedex they already said that, Fedex seems to love the city. and we are not land locked like MEM. Eric

Think, revenue ton miles would make the most sense.
Bye the way, FedEx bigger (fleet and rtm) as UPS (I think so)? I am not sure, have no figures.

Very true, but I think AA and UA are even more impressive considering that neither has any all-cargo planes (as NW does) and only carries freight and cargo in the bellies of their passenger aircraft. The fact that AA and UA haul so much cargo on their regularly scheduled passenger flights is amazing, and probably due largely to AA's enormous cargo market in Latin America and UA's in Asia.

Being they're owned by the same holding, would their numbers combined be anywhere near FedEx?

Shame UPS uses more trucks to haul air than Fed Ex. They deliver twice as much as all the Fed Ex's combined.

Combined, they are larger than FedEx (639K FTKs vs. 438K FTKs).

I'll believe that when there are 20 A380 flights a day.

I believe Emery just went away like a bad dream. Anyone have figures on BAX? Also their DC-8s may finally soon be a thing of the past.

Sort of on topic...Why is it called FedEx Express? Doesn't that really mean Federal Express Express? Never made sense to me...perhaps some FDX people can shed some light on this?

in regards to UA. do they still have any "Worldwide Cargo" planes? or did that cease to exist when they retired all their DC-10's?

did UA not make enough money to keep the DC-10 fleet flying as cargo only planes?

United no longer operates any freighter aircraft. I'm not sure when they stopped.

The United DC-10-30F fleet was retired following Christmas 2000. UA had been using the aircraft since 1997, however due to lack of reported profitability (remember this was during the Asian economic downturn) and poor operational reliability of the DC-10 freighter service terminated along with the closure of the Anchorage crew base. The four aircraft were subsequently sold to Fedex.

Since 2000, United on two occasions has tried to return to the all cargo business by way of ACMI lease of capacity from Atlas Air. On both occasions (last time in 2004), ALPA has blocked plans as ACMI flying contradicts the unions scope clause. Instead look for the possibility UA to likely enter into block space / code share agreements with cargo carriers.

UPS, yeah they renamed themselves "Menlo", lost a couple of contracts, and whatever was the rest of them was finally absorbed by Big Brown. The DAY hub is already o will be closed.

Emery started as a Freight Forwarder and was once the best US company in that trade, that was in the 50s and 60s. They should have kept to that instead of eciding to become an airline as well.

NWA always was a cargo airline as well and still is the only US passenger carrier with a fleet of all cargo planes. UA/AA tried that, TW/PA are no longer, DL/US never had all cargo fleets.

Pan Ham is right. UPS bought Menlo this year (Former Emery) mostly for the book of business. UPS is adding freight hubs as well along with buying freight company Overnight. When everything is in place the FTK rating will go up. UPS hasn't focused much on freight in the past as Fed Ex has. Instead UPS Supply Chain Solutions (forwarding and Logistics) has used other carriers based upon space and price. This is going to change.

It's because it's the Express (3DA, 2DA, 1DA) small package delivery unit of the FedEx company. From the FedEx website:

Quoting FedEx.com:

Today's FedEx is led by FedEx Corporation, which provides strategic direction and consolidated financial reporting for the operating companies that compete collectively under the FedEx name worldwide: FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Freight, FedEx Kinko's Office and Print Services, FedEx Custom Critical, FedEx Trade Networks and FedEx Services.
