The A350 part of it was not entirely unexpected. Glad to see that Boeing got a piece of that action in the form of 777s.

Haven't most people been saying it was 787 all the way?

Lol this would be a classic if true. How wrong we can get things.

I've always said the 787 was to small for those kind of carriers, also for EK.
The 777/350 mix makes more sence.

I didn't realize the A359 was of major interest to Qatar. Their plans sounded more modest before. 80 planes sounds like too much.

Have they ordered 20 777-300ER? That would make sense, since it would not be logical to roder the A359 and 777-200ER.

The article says at least half (10) of this order will be for the 777-300ER.

Paris: Qatar Airways Order 60 A350 And 20 B777

Mon Jun 13, 2005 8:31 pm

This is a great start to the show and the good to see QR finally announce their intentions.

Any further details on the other 10 777s from Boeing? Will they be 772LR or a mix of the 772LR and 772F.

I'm pleased to see the A350 garner a substantial Launch order and with the Dubai Airshow not too far away perhaps EK will add momentum to the program even though I'm sure Airbus will have one or two "cards up their sleeve" in relation to further A350 orders.  Wink

Will they BUY or LEASE from say ILFC these T7s ?
As they go A350 , it will be a judicious sense to lease them and to replace them with A350-900s later for fleet communality.
Probably they buy or lease them as they can be delivered in a short time.

Good question. I didn't even think about the 777F, seems logic as well. Cargo is very important to/from the gulfregion.

Interesting that Qatar are ordering both the 358 and 359. Does the 60 figure include any options or are they all firm orders - what is the breakdown for 358 and 359 models ?

Must provide some relief to Airbus after watching 787 sales take off.

Good news for both A & B.

FCKC

ILFC have no outstanding 777 orders available for delivery. So either way they will be new orders. It is a good question too and I would almost be inclined to ask the same of their entire A350 commitment given that 80 frames is 20 more than the original 60 frame order that was expected, so perhaps we'll see some A350s via ILFC. That is just my opinion though sir.

I agree that 80 airplanes seems like too many for a Qatar based airline. Cathay Pacific has something like 90 airplanes in their fleet. But hey, it is their money and I wish them success.

I think it is fair to say that A340 is now dead or in terminal condition...the A330 is not looking too healthy either. Just my observation now that the 350 which straddles both niches is coming into existence.

Unbelievable... when everybody thought QR is going for the B787, they shocked us all and ordered 60 of the A350!!!

Wonder what EK will do next? Will do shock us even more and order the B787 instead of the A350?

Anything is possible!!!

If I were a European airline CEO right now, I would start worrying about...now. Between Emirates, Qatar, and Etihad (sic?), there are going to be a lot of airplanes based in the middle east in very near future and they have to go somewhere. These middle eastern airlines will be competing for Europe's eastbound cargo and passenger traffic.

I sure was expecting QR to go all the way Airbus. I didn't expect them to go for any Boeings. Good job Boeing! this will atleast plant the seed in QR's land and then Boeing can build from there later in the future. besides, the A350 is not even lanched yet so who knows what will happen.

A most sexy mix. Surely the 773 is the 773ER, rather than the 773A. What does this bring the 772LR total up to? Have they broken even on it yet?

Not sure what you mean but EK is said to not be ordering until September.

But the triple digit orders are indeed likely. With 30 from US, they are up to 90 and so only need another 10 from someone like Iberia to make it.

This is from the Airbus site:

Speaking at a press conference at the air show, Sheik Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Chief Executive Officer, declared: “The order was made after a very detailed evaluation and a very extensive analysis. In the end, the commonality with the A330s already in our fleet and the advantage of the A350 in terms of seat mile cost were the decision factors.”

The aircraft will complement the A330s and A340s in Qatar’s fleet and provide the airline with enhanced range and superior flexibility for missions ranging form short-haul regional routes to long haul routes to America.”

The order is evaluated at 10.6 billions US dollars. The A350s, a mix of A350-800s and –900s are planned for delivery from mid-2010 to 2015.

Doha based Qatar Airways is the largest all-Airbus operator in the Middle East. It boasts a growth rate of 40 per cent year on year. Qatar is also about to introduce in its fleet the A340-600 high gross weight for which it is launch customer.
There's still a long way to go before all the alliances deserve a star...

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised we see a large number of additional 777-300ER orders from both QR and EK over the next few months. The 773ER has demonstrated better-than-expected fuel burn and is the perfect plane for QR and EK for more route expansion to larger cities in Africa and Eurasia.

Airbus might as well kiss their A340-500/600 sales goodbye.  Wink  duck

That struck me as odd as well... one is a maximum order and one a minimum order. Makes one wonder what the final tally will be (e.g., 30 firm + 30 options for A350s and 20 firm + X options for 777s). It sounds to me like a little spin for the headlines, but what would QR have to gain from that?

In any case, great day for both Airbus and Boeing.

With another 80 planes on the way for Qatar Airways, they will almost certainly HAVE to expand the airport terminal in Doha. I was there last April and that tarmac was at full capacity with around 20-25 aircraft parked and only half of that number was Qatar Airways aircraft.

I agree as well. Where are they going to fly those planes? Ek at least has Dubai O&D traffic to fall back on, but Qatar? Where does Qatar feel the pax will come from, India? Australia? UK? I feel like both EK and Qatar haven't skipped a beat strategy wise even though so many countries have liberalized and continue to liberalize air agreements. I would imagine they both need under served markets to exploit, and those routes seem fewer and fewer.

It's a bit weird, but I don't think the 772ER was included in the deal. The orders are 773ERs, 772LRs and 772LRFs. Airbus has no challenge to these aircraft (apart from the A340NG LOL).

Good news--glad to see the A350 finally pick up some orders. Has its design been frozen yet? Cause all the artist impressions look exactly like an A330 to me.

With another 80 planes on the way for Qatar Airways, they will almost certainly HAVE to expand the airport terminal in Doha. I was there last April and that tarmac was at full capacity with around 20-25 aircraft parked and only half of that number was Qatar Airways aircraft.
I smell a Terminal 2 being built at DOH...

No terminal two at the current DOH, but rather a completely new airport on reclaimed land to the East of the current airport. These plans were announced last year.

I have read in here that the A350-900 is a threat to the 777-200ER, but how does it compete against the 777-200LR? I apologize in advance if this has been discussed, please point me to the correct thread.

KL808,

How do you mean? While competition certainly improves productive efficiency, there may be few casualties or players taken entirely out of the market along the way.

I think the EU carriers dont need to worry much, too much capacity in that part of the world is probably not good. There might be a casualty when you have 3 mega carriers in ONE region within 1 hour flying of each other.
