Airbus To Announce New A380 Customer In Paris

Mon Jun 13, 2005 10:04 pm

PARIS AIR SHOW Airbus says will announce new A380 order during air show
06.13.2005, 09:08 AM

PARIS (AFX) - Airbus SAS vice-president Philippe Delmas said the plane maker will announce a new order for its A380 double-decker 'superjumbo' at the Le Bourget air show.

Asked whether Airbus would be announcing a new A380 order this week, Delmas replied: 'One can expect that.'

Airbus will hold a press conference tomorrow morning.

The company has so far received 154 orders for the A380, of which 144 are firm deals. Breakeven on the project has been put as high as 300 planes should the dollar remain weak.

Airbus is owned 80 pct by the European Aeronautic Space and Defence Co (EADS) and 20 pct by BAE Systems PLC.

CX would be my opinion, or, maybe a follow on order from an existing customer?

My prediction is Air China. Cathay is possible too, but it'll be a cold day in hell before JAL buys A380, or anything from Airbus for that matter...

CX's order won't be so soon, if they ever get the A 380.

Has Air China ordered any A 380s so far?

Even Airbus co-chairs are now saying that the breakeven is "considerably higher" then 300 frames.

There have been rumours floating around for quite some time about EK ordering the stretched A380-900. However, it still amazes me how EK would utilize so much A380, they already have 43 on order which IMO already is a lot. In anyway I wish Airbus good luck  Smile

It's possible that Airbus may have finally snagged CX to do a long-term lease through ILFC for the A380-800. Maybe Airbus has given assurances that the A388 can fly nonstop from LAX to HKG at the standard MTOW for the plane with the Trent 870 engines?

Don't forget about the pending announcement for the "private A380". When it hit the presses a couple weeks back, it wasn't an official announcement. That's my guess.

Lets take a look at this. In all likely hood it is an existing customer that already has the 340/330 family of aircraft. So that really rules out BA. What about LH, are they already a customer.

Fairly wild, yes - but not completely out there. SAA could use maybe 4 aircraft for the LHR-JNB routes, more if they add CPT as well. The routes do very well, and are very departure-time sensitive (ie. flights always have to go at night, in both directions), so the only way to sensibly increase capacity on the route is bigger aircraft.

Ariticle appeared in the South African Sunday Times that SAA was in advanced talks with Airbus on the purchase of a handful of A 380's for delivery at the end of the decade - sounded pretty conclusive however may too early for a paris announcement

It DEFINITELY will not be JAL! They have too many 747's in their fleet at the moment to all of a sudden switch to another model. But who knows, maybe in the distant future, when the 747D's need to be replaced, they might buy some ultra high capacity aircraft in the 700-800 seat range...

KLM/AF (my fourth pick) Transatlantic
Delta (wild guess) Transatlantic
Air Canada (not)
SAS (not)
Iberia (not)
ANA (my third pick) HD Asia routes

I really don´t expect any big (pun intended) surprises at Le Bourget this year and, let´s face it, an A380 order by an European or American airline definitely would be a surprise at this moment.

My guesses are either CX or CA, too, but anyways an Asian carrier.

Why not? A big A380 order as camouflage for rescue by Airbus.

UA flying A380 is cool... but I dont think it will happen... YOU NEED LOTS AND LOTS OF money to support this new bird. This is not an average plane that fits with existing routes... the A380 requires a huge capital investment... from new ground procedures and equipment, terminal reconfigurations to flight training... I dont think so... UA doesn't have the resources required... but good try....

That's why it's called rescue. The investment by Airbus will be paid back by future orders against market-conform prices. Or do you think UA will never make money again? It would surprise me because IMO it still is the very best US airline!

So Who ? CX, JAL, ??

As many threads and posts that I've seen about why Cathay Pacific WILL NOT BE PURCHASING THE A380 SOON in the past week alone, what is your basis for speculating this extreme move???

Quoting FRAspotter (Reply 31):
It DEFINITELY will not be JAL! They have too many 747's in their fleet at the moment to all of a sudden switch to another model. But who knows, maybe in the distant future, when the 747D's need to be replaced, they might buy some ultra high capacity aircraft in the 700-800 seat range...
The A380D

Why do people on this forum continue to ponder the idea that JAPAN AIR LINES will be purchasing the A380 anytime soon. As many people who have brought more than valid reasons as to why the whalejet would not fit into JAL's short- and even long-terms plans to the table, there are still these overambitious A.netter who refuse to conform to rationalizing.

And JAL WILL NOT be replacing their high-density domestic 747D's with A380s. Why do people keep saying that. A plane designed with a 8,000+ mile range will not be replacing a plane built for ultra-short 300nm or less sectors. And Airbus will need to design an A380D before you can start making these predictions. 744Ds are highly modified to be able to do short-haul runs. Its not like any carrier can just say, give us a regular 744 and it'll be fine. Landing gears have to be reinforced and modified to accomodate the extremely high amount of landing cycles the domestic 744 incurrs throuhgout its lifetime. Not to mention several other key differences. JAL also operates the largest or second largest (I tend to forget) 747 fleets in the world. So why would they need to order the A380???

If I am wrong about CX and JL then I will definitely look stupid and eat my words but until then, I can only go with what makes sense to me at this time.

My bet will be BA, they'll get rid of the transatlantic 747's and keep only a handful, and use the A380's for the Atlantic and Australia/Hong Kong/Japan services.
