BBC Top Gear Airfield

Tue Jun 14, 2005 12:43 am

Well the people in the UK might know what Top Gear is, it is a program on BBC 2 on Sundays about motoring (great program).

I watched last nights episode, this morning (recorded it) and it is filmed on a airfield in Guildford and I noticed that there was a 747 in the background, it had a blue tail and engines, white fuse and no titles.

1) does any body else watch and like the program
2) if you sore the episode, was there a 747 in the background.
3) any more info.

I think it might be this one,

(Sorry, I can't find the photos, of when they landed one on a very short runway.) Can someone help me to find them.

Do you mean the episode, where he flies the BBJ2 and compares it to a Nissan Micra! LOL. And in the end he comes up with the conclusion, that the Micra offers more value for money? If you mean that, I saw it, but dont remember a 747.

Hey.

I watch Top Gear and I watched it last night, I also noticed the 747 in the background, looked like -200.
I'm just wandering if was perhaps one of the old Travel City planes that they first used leased from EAL ??

On a different note I was quite tempted by that puppy ! But I'd eventually take the car lol.
I hope in life i can work to live, not live to work

I saw the episode last night and logged onto a.net to ask which airfeild they use for filming. Thanks for saving me the trouble.

Can't wait to see what they do with the 747.

I noticed it too. It was during Christopher Eccleston's lap, wasn't it?

Imagine if 'The Stig' gets it.

They have had an Apache there, a harrier and an F1 car. I wonder what the lap time would be.

They could get the stig to taxi the 747 around the track.

If the stig test drives a 747 what is he going to use to listen to the lousy music? (no cd player)

I got the strangest feeling its James May. Whenever Clarkson does his "And who did we give it to? THE STTTTIG...", May is never there...

Didnt he used to be a Touring Car Driver?

The show is filmed at a different time to the track runs. sometimes the track runs are filmed months before the show is filmed.

Not sure about that. Not hard to show a videotape of the lap.

It certainly used to be Perry McCarthy although heard as his identity was revealed (following the incident with the 1953 Duncan Hamilton Jaguar) he was replaced. From what I have heard now it isn't the same person every week.

I live right next to the airport, however i am parallel to the runway, so didn't know it was there until about a week ago, when i saw it at the airshow.

Though i see it every day on the way to school.

man, I saw a show where they tested the BMW M5E39.

JESUS, they completely f**ed up the car and tryied to reck the car in all ways possible, the Jeremy guys couldn´t belive, he kept on saying: I´m pushing my human limit here and this car want´s more and more!!!
Also, there was a show where they put a litle plane in flight to compete againt a Ferrari on a 1/4 mile track to see whom´s faster

ps. Does anybody have a link or something that shows Schumacher F-1 Ferrari against a Jet Fighter??

the 747 is to be used as a filming location, by the airport owners - Dunsfold Park. Its nothing to do with Top Gear.

Good show last night,
BUT what was Jeremy doing drowning a poor old Roller?!?!?! I'll never forgive him for that...
Anyway, that photo in "airplanepics" message says "to be scrapped". Maybe they'll have some fun with it before that happens. Knowing Jeremy he'll compare it with a Smart Car...or blow it up for no particular reason...or they'll get the Stig to drive it round the track...or maybe race it against an Aston DB9 to Sydney...
Anything can happen on that programme.

There is a lot of speculation that it is now Damon Hill.

Quoting Atco2b (Reply 16):

No way. James is sloooooow. He's always being mocked for it. I remember a couple of years back he had some kind of race with JC and lost because he was "listening to Radio 2 and smoking". Wogan is enough to slow anyone down I guess, hence is crappy time on the 'Star in a reasonable Priced Car' rankings.

Quoting Atco2b (Reply 16):

Tiff Needel (ex TG) used to race Touring Cars amongst other things. Jason Plato who presents the crappy Fifth Gear on Five still races Touring Cars. But no James May.

Here's the clip for Schumi vs Jet, it's just a BBC report though. Listen closely, the reporter sounds oddly like a flight attendant!

That could be Fifth Gear on 'five' (Channel Five in the UK). I think it is.

Dunsfold is the place where Hawker Siddely finished off the Harrier and test flew it.

Man I love A.net. I watched Top Gear last night and noticed the same thing and thought I would surely be the only person in the world wondering what the deal was. But no. Further proof that airliner geeks are indeed normal people who like cars and chicks and beer and all the rest of it. Sweet.

So the Top Gear Airfield is active? Would never have guessed.

Dunsfold is shown on the charts as a Disused or Abandoned Aerodrome - shown for navigational landmark purposes only.

This doesn't mean that it cannot be used though, just that it isn't normally used as an aerodrome.
