AS To Order "a Couple Of Dozen More 737s"

Boeing also has apparently locked up an Alaska Airlines order for a couple of dozen more 737s.

Thanks for posting this article.

The most important message is that things have changed at Boeing in the past year....they have gotten serious about buidling and selling airplanes again which will certainly make for far more interesting competitions in the coming years. Aircraft do not sell themselves, Boeing lost focus and gave Airbus an incredible opportunity - its about time that Boeing is getting serious again.

It will be interesting to see which versions of the 737NG family that Alaska goes with - part of this order is about expansion, and part of this new order will be about replacing the MD80 fleet. Will Alaska launch (of be part of a group of airlines that launch) the 737-900ER?

Even more important than Alaska, Boeing seems to be on much better terms with ILFC which could mean many potential orders for all types in the fleet - in the past years, ILFC was working more and more closely with Airbus which was not good for Boeing for many reasons. Big leasing customers help drive the market and create demand for specific types of airliners, and also help manfacturers even out production schedules during slower periods.

Boeing does have a lot of catching up to do - a strong and focused Boeing, along with a strong and focused Airbus, is the best thing that can happen to the troubled airline industry. It means good competitive products at sharp prices, with advanced technology being added.

This is not A vs B for once - its A + B - which is the best result for all concerned.

I'd be banking on 738s, with 739X being a possibility if Boeing can deliver on the improved economics the 739X should bring.

Royal -

I've also heard some internal rumblings about a AS fleet replacement/expansion order, but I haven't seen anything official. Right now, the only thing I'm showing outstanding for AS are 3 more 738s to be delivered in Dec 05, Jan 06 and Feb 06, respectively.

But from what I'm hearing, the talk is somewhere along the lines of more 73G's (MD-80 replacements), more 738s (longer-haul/current 739 routes), 739X (a little longer range and capacity increase).

I wouldn't be surprised; Alaska loves their 737s. The article didn't mention what model they would be, though, and it seemed vague in general. I would imagine that they would be more of the -900 series, but, if they're planning to use them to replace their old -400 models, the -800 would be a more direct replacement. I do hope they go with the -900, though. That extra two inches of pitch is nice for a man of my stature.

On-time performance is being addressed. By the end of the summer they should be back on track. New deliveries would be months or, more likely, years out. I fail to see how the two relate in any real fashion.

Afterall, it seemed pretty much the consensus that once Alaska got it's labor agreements worked out a new order would be coming, and 20 aircraft +/- seems in the ballpark.

One of the reasons that they are pushing so hard on aircraft utilization is due to the lack of deliveries - the only other way to grow is increase aircraft use, and it appears that, for one reason or another (likely several), they've pushed too far.

Yeah, Alaska is trying to grow pretty quickly these days, so I can imagine that they would run into problems like that.

I'm no mechanic, but would newer planes like the 737-900 have shorter turn-around times than older aircraft like the MD-80? If that's the case, it would certainly follow that buying the new 737s would help with delays and on-time performance.

It's nice to see that Alaska is so concerned about the inconvenience to their passengers. It almost gives one hope that they will go back to the standard of excellence that Northwesterners loved not so long ago.

I'm still thinking 738s will be the bulk of the order, with 739X orders thrown in. While AS loves the 73G, the economics of it don't work as well as the 738 does in the system.

Kahala777, maybe if you look at the big picture instead of bashing AS, you can see the real world.

Alaska is (1) replanning their schedule to get OT performance up. (2) OT performance is due to lack of A/C. (3) Lack of A/C is due to planes coming out of C-check later then expected mainly, a few other issues arising as well.

Alaska , now that the pilot contract has been ratified (more or less) has open the door for more planes. This was something that was promised to them as when the contract was in negotiations. Alaska is responding as well as possible after getting its back agaist the wall.

I would tend to agree (who am I though  Smile ). the 738 would appear to be an ideal aircraft for AS, more so than the 73G or even perhaps the 739X (too few and too many seats, respectively). The 73G would appear to be a great intro on a long-haul route, but from what I can tell, they have shown that they can fill the seats on the transcons - thus the need for a 738. The 739X, however, while perhaps great on some routes, would be too much on most, so I would imagine (which is all I can do) that they would opt for an overall smaller percentage of these.
