NW DC10 At LGW In The Evening?

Tue Jun 14, 2005 3:13 am

This is my 1st topic so bear with me if I'm dumb. I did try searching but didn't yield the goodies I was after.

Yesterday and the day before I came into LGW and noticed a DC10 sitting at a remote stand in the evening looking a bit lonely, I was wondering if anyone knows what it was doing there at that time (8pm/9pmish) as its not a common sight there especially where it was (somewhere north of the north terminal) Anyone know if its still there or when its leaving?

The link refers to LGA not LGW.

Ah Bennet123, you just beat me to it!

Speedbirdcrew, you say it was parked north of the north terminal? That would be behind a grass bank and out of the airport.

I think its by a cargoshed, somewhere near the 60's I was on the wrong side of the aircraft to see the stand number everytime I went past! May be gone now as I didn't fly today so didn't go anywhere near the airport. Anyone know why it was there?

Has DTW-LGW gone back to 330 service? In that case, NW might be alternating DC-10's on the MSP-LGW service; that is, rotating the aircraft with each one having about 24 hours at LGW. That keeps them from having a tight turn at LGW.

Perhaps it is an operational spare kept in LGW. MSP and DTW-LGW are both DC10s. There are 22 in service and only 14 in rotation it is quite possible that this plane could be a spare to ensure operational intergrity. Or it could have had mx issues and is awaiting parts or repair.

With the 3 DC-10 Trans-Atlantic flights from DTW this summer: LGW, FCO, AMS, NW has been positioning an operational spare in DTW. As AZJ said, very likely one is positioned in LGW, or mechanical.
