Actually, they are quite common, relatively speaking, in the Caribbean region. Go to SJU, and you will see whole fleets of them, most of them flying cargo.

I wonder if they were using derate, there's been a big debate on the DC-3 sites over the use of this.

At least if its a cargo aircraft any fatalities will be kept to a minimum, yet I still greatly hope the pilots survived...

On the footage just showed on the news, the aircraft was not too broken up (wings, tail, body, all where they should be), but it was badly burned and looked gutted. Hopefully the pilots were able to get out before the cockpit burned up. Also, it looked as though it crashed in the middle of a street in a residential neighborhood.

The live video off the NBC TV site had some closeup shots of the wreckage. I'd say the impact likely was surviveable, it all depends on whether the crew was able to get out before the fire engulfed the cockpit. Fortunately, there's no apparent damage to any of the houses in the immediate vicinity.

PHL...I understand now...considering FLL has a lot of pilots who know what the are doing and understand whats going on, their news coverage of plane crashes/incidents are horrible....the only good things are they cover it to the end, but they don't know the planes. Damn media...thats why i'm majoring in communications!

They just put a picture of the DL DC3 on Channel 7.

The props on the starboard engine look OK, unlike the props on the port engine.

Also it looks more like a belly landing followed by fire than a crash.

Hopefully it was survivable.

Let's just say that, regardless of the cause of the accident, the pilot did a great job of bringing the plane down and hopefully surviving. It's one thing to land a crippled plane on Flight Simulator, it's another thing to do it in real life, especially something like a DC-3 (as compared to a single-engine prop).

And I'll bet it's even harder to land the cripped aircraft in the middle of a narrow tree-lined residential street.

I agree... Looks like a left engine failure due to the lack of damage and it also looks feathered.

I work right next to FXE - our building is at 2200 West Cypress Creek - overlooking the runway.....and people driving in for the night shift said they saw the plane about 150 feet or so from the ground before impact. Unfortunately, when I turn on the TV - even down in South Florida - all that is on is this stupid perverted Michael Jackson case and how he escaped justice.

Thank goodness the pilots are alive. I wish them well. They should be highly commended for getting the plane down where they did, and not on all those houses. I had a bad feeling when I saw the crash shots that it was this plane. I still remember the sound as I took the shot above...

DC-3 are very common in Miami. They still fly all around the US. Not in passenger service.

DC-3 are used for cargo alot in the carribean. Thank god it was not a sightseeing plane could have been alot worse.

When I first got the news I heard it was a UPS DC-8. But the news also said the plane was going to the Bahamas once they said that I knew it had to be a DC-3 or smaller plane like that.

My buddy lives right next to 56th st across from Northeast High School, no more than 1/2 mile down the street from the crash site. He said he was outside washing his car when the plane literally flew over his house @ about 50 feet, and was porpousing up and down just before it impacted down 56th. He's a trained firefighter, so he hauled ass down to the scene to do what he could while waiting for the engines to show up. He said the trees along side the road were sheered off at the top, including palm trees, and there were prop and engine pieces scattered all over the street. Truly tragic.
