Why not, maybe they are re-configuring them for International routes?

They don't get the same range as the 752's, and probably aren't as efficient, due to a larger weight due to a longer fuselage, but the same wing as the 752.

They are only removing three rows of coach seating from the aircraft. That is hardly enough space to fit 24 BizElite seats. To offer 24 BizElite seats they would have to take a few rows from after the second exit door. The 753 configuration goes from 12/210 to 24/192. That is unless they plan to pull an AA and fly domestically configured aircraft over the Atlantic, which I doubt.

I forgot to ask in the original post, but is this the same configuration they had before they removed the three rows of first class seats to make way for more coach seating?

Interesting........if you remember, when CO first took delivery of its nine B753s, they had 24 F class seats (domestic F), then about 18 months ago, the F cabin was cut back to 12 seats and an additional 18 Y class seats were installed.....logic was that the 753 flies mainly low yeild leisure route with high demand - think EWR-Florida, Houston-Las Vegas/New Orleans, etc., thus F class capacity was not needed.

The reaction was horrible: premium passengers hated the new layout, frequently F class seats were not available for last minute bookings (yes, some pax actually do pay to fly up front, especially last minute bookings from business people) and OnePass members were purposely avoiding flights on the 753 since upgrades (which is the biggest perc in the OnePass program) were far and few between on 753 flights, even for Platinums. There were rumors out there saying that management acknowledged that they made a mistake with the 753s, but nothing was done.

The configuration is now being changed back to 24 F for several reasons - one, passengers and FF members were unhappy and let it be known, two, with additional 753s joining the fleet (the 8 ex-ATA birds), the 753 will have a bigger role in the CO fleet, and look for the 753s to appear on transcons out of EWR, IAH-West Coast flights, etc - routes that also have lots of business traffic and are not only leisure oriented, and, three, with more and more 752s flying international routes (possibly all 752s will get BF interiors in the future) and, for practical purposes, the end of CO widebody domestic flights for the nearterm future, the 753 will have a wider role in the CO domestic fleet and the reconfigruation will inject more F class seats into the route system.

CO is making a good move here, I know that I am pleased.

If a bizFirst layout was used, only 16 seats could go up front, just like the 752 - your analysis is correct. Do note, however, that CO is studying a 24 seat BF layout for the 752 (with 2 extra rows of BF seats behind the midcabin door, 18 or 24 Y class seats would be removed) but that is another story.

Yep, you are right again, CO is going back to the original layout that the 753 had when the original four were delivered.

As I recall, the original configuration was 24/186 ... Looks like six more seats will be squeezed in somewhere.  crowded

Finally. Now let's see them put the F seats back in the 735's, the six they now have remind me of when US Air had one row of F on DC-9's and BAE-146's - hardly a premium experience, and very limited opportunity for elite flyers to bag an upgrade.

This is already a work in progress, although it goes to 8F not the 10 it originally had. Config will be 8/106. They are removing most of the forward galley and adding the 2 seats there. Hot food will be cooked in the back, and served from the front galley.

we were not amused by this config...

well, considering it's been flying both of these routes for 2 years now (ever since the 12/210 conversion), I don't have to look for them. They are already here, and pissing off a lot of transcon business travelers. Compared to the UA and AA transcon service, 12/210 was pitiful. In the winter we'd get some 762s and 764s on those two routes, but in summer, those planes go to europe and the 753s come to us.  Sad

6 is transitional only. they are rearranging the front closet/galley, and it will open up another 1/2 row for 8 total F on the 735. This config has been on CO's website. The 10F config is now completely gone, and the 8F is there also. 8/106 is far more reasonable than 10/94 from COs standpoint.

My issue with it was that adding 8 222-seat jets to the fleet, in the already shitty domestic yield environment, was going to be dumping way too much capacity into our domestic system. A smaller fleet with this configuration may have made sense in select markets, but with this particular jet accounting for large chunk of our narrowbody ASMs, this may not have been the one-size-fits-all approach they were looking for.

I think we may have taken down a closet or a bulkhead somewhere in the cabin to squeeze 6 more seats in; I don't think anything is being done with seat pitch which was nice at 32". The configuration is now much closer to Northwest's 757-300.

This is genius!!! They couldn't dispatch solely the 752 on certain atlantic routes due to the lack of cargo capasity. They can't put the 753 on the atlantic routes due to the range issue. They can use the 753 to eliminate any 767s from the domestic schedules completely and then replace the 752s for further use on trans-atlantic markets. This is not the perfect resolution for CO's widebody problem but it is cost effective and does work. And it makes a lot of people happy in the meantime!

And the 753 lease deals are supposed to be pretty sweet.

Anyway, what this 24F configuration allows is to sub out 752 domestic config on lower yielding routes. The old way, if they needed more coach, they were killing F as well.

the seat count is still nearly the same at 216, but now it is more balanced, cutting 18 economy and giving more premium back to us poor LAX saps who went elite and then got screwed by the 12/210 jet on our routes. Currently 2 of 6 ewr and 4 of 11 iah routes are 753s. blech.

and compared with the 752 16BF planes that also come to LA right now (2 of 6 ewr), it's a real contrast from one plane to the next.

PS - with this change, is it possible that CO might be adding personal video to first as well (seatback, not pop out)? With the new seats and the new planes, it would not be as expensive as completely retrofitting already existing 24F configs, and might explain the 753 listed as having personal video in first in the CO website (though this obviously isn't BF, just plain F).

Nevertheless, having been stuck in back on a 735 once a couple months ago (even as Platinum on an H ticket), I have gone out of my way to avoid segments in the 735. I'll even fly two segments on an ERJ in order to avoid one segment on a 735.

Once I know the 8F configuration is done, I'll give it a try again. In the mean time....  hissyfit
