What's The Longest Layover You've Ever Had?

Fri Apr 21, 2000 8:01 am

What's the longest time you've ever had to layover at an airport while waiting for a connecting flight?

My brother and I once had a layover at YVR for 6 hours, while connecting from YYC and awaiting a CP DC-10-30 flight to HNL back my trip to SYD in 1993. My brother was bored out of his mind. Just over a week ago, my dad had to wait 8-9 hours for the next plane to HNL at YVR while going to SYD!

This was back in 1996.

I had a 4 hour layover in Seoul, Korea. I was connecting on an Asiana 747-400 flight back to SFO. I did some spotting while I was there. It was kind of boring because the airport was kind of empty (or at least that's how I remembered it).

Mine was a 6-hour wait at Heathrow waiting for my flight to New York after coming up from Madrid. I switched Terminals to get to T4, which has a great view of Runway 9R/27L, and watched the flights come and go until it was time to board my flight. Much to my delight and surprise I got to see a Biman DC-10 and the JAT DC-10!

I have not suffered myself, since I do not need a Visa to enter Greece, neither have flown to Beirut (BEY). But some Lebanese people who came to BCN for Holidays did it BEY-ATH-BCN on OA. The travel agencies (AND of course, the Olympic Airways employees there) did not warn them that they needed a Visa to Greece, so they were allowed to overnight in Athens. Because the way back was BCN-ATH the midday, and ATH-BEY... THE DAY AFTER. Those who did not have a visa, were kindly invited to overnight at... the terminal!!!!

I got a chance to really discover all of BCN thanks to Iberia's outstanding punctuality last summer. The first segment DUS-BCN arrived in Barcelona at around 4 p.m. and the next leg to Malaga (AGP) was scheduled to leave at seven. We finally left at 2 a.m. and never got an explanation for the delay. Kind of unprofessional, don't you think?
At least I found a good place for spotting, so there was a positive side effect to this whole fuss.

if delays count as lay overs then i have had quite a few long ones. on a flight from buenos aires to miami i had to wait about 6 or 7 hours because our MD-11 had arrived 12 hour late! the delay was so long that i took a remis back to downtown, had one last bife de lomo and went back to the airport with allot of time to spare. At least the agent at the gate gave me 5 i repeat 5 coach class tickets so i could laydown and sleep for the next 8 hours. That is the only good reason why having 5 seats in the middle is good!

The longest layover I had and I will still have is about 4.5 hours. I fly two times a year from USA to Yugoslavia (I'm a foreign exchange student) and have to change three flights. I usually wait 4.5 hours in Minneapolis or Amsterdam to board on the next plane, which is not that bad because both airports are big and there is stuff to do. If talking about longest delay, it was last year when my flight from Amsterdam to Minneapolis was two hours late. I missed the plane and had to spend one day in Minneapolis because there was no flights for Minot ND after 22:30. It was not bad, I mean what is wrong with spending one day in Minneapolis with paid Hotel and food. I was maybe little bit scared because that was my firs time in the USA. However, it was great experience if not taking into consideration that I had to pay $25 for taxi, because Hotel shuttle was overcrowded.
(Hope there are not too many grammatical errors. This is my first year in the USA and I am still trying to gain better knowledge of English.)

The longest layover I've ever experienced was in Zurich. We were travelling to Iran and we stopped in Zurich. We were only scheduled to stay a couple hours but they announced that the flight was overbooked so they offered us $300 each person (4 of us!). We took it and ended up spending a total of approximately 15 (fifteen) hours in the airport! Right now i am kicking my self hard in the butt because I was about 8 or so and I knew diddly squat about airplanes. I just knew I thought they were cool and that I wanted to go on them as much as possible. I didn't take pics or get timetables or anything. If that happened now I would be in a frenzy all over the airport......ah well.

When i used to fly with my family to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from KORD we had to overnight in frankfurt to wait for the next flight to Riyadh. I guess it was kind of fun though we had a few good days in some of the parks near the hotels.

The longest layover I ever had was in Atlanta, trying to get back to Columbus from San Juan, PR on Eastern Airlines. The total time in Atlanta came to 12 hours. The reason was because of some large snow storms that had paralyzed the airports. I was about 6 years old at the time, but I still remember some of it, especially finally boarding the Eastern DC-9 back to CMH.

My longest layover was in Houston's Intercontinental Airport which was around 3 hours and 40 minutes. I had fun and was browsing around and taking lots of pictures during then then I had to hop a flight 3 hours later to San Diego.

But one day on an Intl. flight to MIA I stayed in MIA for a few hours cause of major delays and on another flight to DCA was delays for another hours, I'd say around 5 hours.

My longest layover was on a LGA-MIA-San Salvador, Bahamas route. We left LGA at 2100 (9:00) and got into MIA at 2300 (11:00) We sat in the airport untill 0830 (8:30) the next morning. The total layover was nine an a half hours. But the time I went w/o sleep was much longer. I woke up at 7:00am to go to LGA (I had to pack) By the time I got to MIA at 11pm it was allready 16hrs. I got into San Salvador at 11:00am thats an additional 12 hrs. I did not go to bed in San Salvador untill 2330 (11:30pm) thats a total of thirty six ans a half hrs.)

If delays count, I had to wait 26 hours for a flight. This was a long time ago - about 10 years ago when I was 3. We were coming to Chicago from Bombay via Heathrow and JFK. Anyway, when we got to JFK, our flight had been cancelled. It was a one of those old every other day flights. Anyway, we got to go to the hotel for free. Then, about 1 hr from departure, an airport shuttle had to take us to La Guardia. It was awful. I was really bored.

My longest layover was in Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport. I was returning from a 30 day trip to Jacksonville, Florida (JAX) and was waiting for my Continental flight back to my home airport of Reno, Nevada (RNO). I sat around the gate and ate food and wondered around the shops near the gate. I am a minor so I had to go on one of those 4 wheeled cart things that minors get on after getting off the plane. They take disabled people and minors around the airport to their next gate. The guy driving the cart was funny, when people wouldn't get out of the way of the cart (he had to yell "coming through"!) he would turn around at us (the people riding the cart) and make a joke about them..... it was fun
