For the very first time, Mexicana lost its traditional position as number one in the intense US-MEXICO market. Official figures for 2004 show that AA
is now leader, followed closely by CO
, despite opening a lot of new routes in US is lagging behind.
Here the top ten carriers in this market of over 13.5 M pax a year.
Pax carried between US-MEXICO (2004)
2.73 M (including American Eagle)
2.70 M (including COEx)
850K (including Delta Connection)
800K (including Mesa)
8. US 684 K
The rest of the legacy carriers have few interest in Mexico. UA
carried only 351 thousand pax in 2004 (compared to its peak in 1994 when it flew 668,000 between the two countries). NW
only carried 284K
A lot has been said about AA
intense strategy to have a stronghold in this market. Well, it has now become clear their are doing their job quite right, while MX
is happy to develop ethnic routes whose freq is seldom 7x. Hope the best to MX
defending its position. I hope we can see MX
back to number one and AM
also increasing its market share. BTW, we already have 6A
among top 10!!!!!
