Boeing Commericial Aircraft's Best Year Ever?

Wed Jun 15, 2005 8:10 am

Currently Boeing is poised to have their best sales year ever. If (big IF) they close all their currently announced orders by December, they need about a 120 orders to surpass their all-time record. Given that there are a number of big potential orders in the queue (QF, SQ, NZ taking options) plus a raft of 777LRF orders, and the potential for 747-adv orders, it looks like there is a stong likelyhood of Boeing pulling this off.

So what were the biggest causes of this enormous turnabout from last year?

- Sales staff changes? (If that's the case Boeing investors should hunt down and hang the old sales team)
- The 787?
- The weak dollar?

Please keep in mind this is about Boeing. The changes they have made and what is the root of their success this year. Other manufacturers are not relevant to this discussion.

(1) After a long time, a complete family of economically viable offerings:

737-600, -700, -800, -900, -900X(?)
747-400, -400ER, -400ERF, -400SF, -Adv(?)
787-3, -8, -9
777-200ER, -200LR, -300ER, -200LRF

(2) Much more aggressive sales philosophy.
(3) General upturn in the commercial aviation marketplace (beginning of the next 10 year cycle).

I'm sure there are more reasons. In general, it looks like there is more focus and vision.

It would appear that the new sales approach is a big factor in their turnaround. Certainly the fact that the 787 caught on in a big way is influential.
The way they are packaging the 777/787 combo is a great sales tool.

As for "best year ever" I think that would depend on whether they can sustain the pace - will the 787 continue to be a hot seller or is everyone who is going to be on board in the near future already ordered? Will the 747Adv finally get the greenlight, or will it die on the vine? What is in the pipeline as far as 737 orders? I wish them continued success.

Malaysian has a short haul, single aisle order in the works...competition between 737-800 and A320.

This has been an absolutely amazing year for Boeing, and it is possible that they could set an all-time sales record. Consider the following:

o 1990 - most B747 orders in one year = 122
o 1989 - most B767 orders in one year = 97
o 2000 - most B777 orders in one year = 116
o 1996 - most B737 orders in one year = 400
o 1989 - most B757 orders in one year = 166
o 1996 - most total orders (excluding MDD) = 670

With 210 orders and commitments for the B787 this year, they have smashed any previous wide-body total by a wide margin, and the year is only half over!

In the single-aisle market, Boeing has booked 189 firm orders and they have commitments for at least 150 for a total of nearly 340. They only need 60 more B737's to equal or exceed their all-time high of 400 in 1996.

It looks like Boeing could exceed 700 this year. Maybe 800!

Great to see Boeing with so many orders this year, hopefully they can keep them up and break the 700 orders.

Cheers,
