Have a look at this : http://www.telegraphindia.com/section/frontpage/index.asp

why is Mallya buying the A380 ? where will he keep it ? or will he build a separate airport all for his A380 ? or does he plan to fly with all models from India to S Africa for a photo session for his calender ?

The dream becomes reality as Kingfisher confirm the following;

5 x A330
5 x A350
5 x A380

One thing for sure. After the past years orders and current orders at Paris I'll be heading to India to photograph plenty of airplanes in splendid liveries. It's great to witness the changes and expansion taking place.

That desire has been expressed by KF and earlier it was made by DN MD Gopinath... There is talk of the concept of 'Rajdhani' in the air. It would probably be refering to

either

Getting the Rajdhani travellers to convert to flying

OR

just naming it after the premium Indian Train which also carries about 750-800 pax in luxury...

It will be interesting to see how many of the new low-cost airlines in India actually survive after 5 years. With so many starting up the competition is going to be fierce. There's going to be shake-out at some point. This has already happened in Europe.

I wonder how bad delays are going to be in India in the next decade. The infrastructure just isn't there. I've only been to Calcutta and Dehli but neither of those airports could support a significant large number of movements at this time. How many billons of dollars is going to be needed to spent over the next ten to twenty years.

How many runways do the major aiports in India have?
How many jetways do most airports have?
How many parking spots on the tarmac?
How many buses?
How many entrances?

Its going to get crowded.

Of course the infrastructure needs growing, but there is time for it. The A380 and A350 won't be able until at least 2010, it won't be until at least 10 years that all the airplanes will be delivered and used. Lots of money will be invested, that's natural. What did you think, that Indian airports would stay as they are today for ever? Air traffic is growing, particularly in India and China (that's what economists say), so they will definitely have to upgrade their airports. There's no problem with that, it's not wasted money, they will make profits with it.

Forget the A380/350- that represents about 1-2 max flights a day per airplane (unless they stick the A380 into high density domestic config)-> what's concerning is the number of single aisle jets that'll be hitting the runways within the next couple of years- 737/A320 series planes. Building runways and new airports or terminals- now that takes time and India isn't famous for moving fast. India doesnt have the benefit of having as many secondary airports as europe or the USA-> ramping up service could run into some serious traffic snarls.

Well... not much as changed in the last 25-30 years in Indian airports. It's still the same chaos I have experienced over the last 20 years traveling to India. So what makes you think it will change anytime soon. Especially the attitude of people who work there (paid miniscule salaries and could care less about passenger comfort or efficiency - talk to all the "security gaurds" who check you and STAMP your boarding passes 10 times on the way to the aircraft). As things work in India with govt. apporvals, local BS, etc it seems it takes forever to get anything done. And then there is corruption. In addition, where will all this money come from? India has a tremendous problem with poverty and illiteracy to name a few and will the govt. simply cut money from improving these situations to just build airports especially when the govt. still won't allow majority ownership by foreign companies of infra-structures like airports. How about building some power plants or a network of modern highway system within India first? It is amazing in 2005 cities like Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai experience regular power cuts. The roads are in such horrible condition all over India while only few hundred miles away in Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore you can see modern, efficient road systems. So to tell us the Indian airports will change in time... think again! Hardly anything ever changes in India! By the way, as of today India has approx. 140 billion dollars in foreign reserves and most of that will be needed to finance oil imports and paying back foreign debt.
The fun of flying... love it !!!

I don't think any one in their right minds is going to refute your statements. However - there's a lot of optimism in the air - and we're hopeful (of course not 100% confident) that things will improve. It's a chicken and egg thing - surely the investors have done some research before putting their money on the table?

Yup, things in India may have not been changed in a lot of time and are hard to change, but India is one of the economically fastest growing countries on Earth (isn't it?). If infrastructures don't improve, they'll have a hard time. I'd say that investors really want things to develop, and I'd assume that many dollars are going to be invested. They better, because otherwise they'll have problems for sure. No that I'm arguing with you, I just see all that necessary.

Well some things do change. I remember when it took 3 hours to clear customs because they checked each and ever thing. Then you went and paid the duty or the bribe (my family never paid the bribe). Now leaving the airport is very quick. Oh and let's give credit to BOM for finally building an overhand so that you could get into a car without getting soaked! As someone who went back every other summer during monsoons, I truly thank the management for that after SO many years of being drenched. I thought once the airport was renamed after Shivaji the local government would want ot improve the airport, I was wrong.

At some point they will be forced. There will be tremendous pressure from the airlines and passengers to improve the airports. It will then be in the interest of politicians to do it as they run the risk of losing votes if they don't do it.

Same goes for new roads. As there are more drivers/car owners they will start to insist on new and better roads. Just look at the Golden Quadrilateral project. From what I understand a lot of it is being built using outside firms.

Also remember when politicians are forced to wait in traffic, or sit on a taxiway they'll start making changes.  Wink

I wonder what Indigo Air Chief is planning to do with the 100 320's he ordered. Count....lets say after it has all the aircrafts in service... maybe at one time 20 each will be at BOM and DEL, 10 each at BLR,HYD,CCU,MAA, 10 in other airports and another 10 in the air. Looks like Indigo may have the largest fleet amongst all Indian airlines in one single GO.. Big grin

Those politicians never have to wait in traffic or at airports.

But I suspect that private players will put enough pressure on these third rate marginally literate politicians - or at least pay them off - to do something about infrastructure.

Surely, beer money goes a long way, in many places on the globe, Kingfisher
the beer airline.
Frankly I think India and it´s airports changed a lot since 1991 and 2004, my
two visits to airports in India.
I hope that Kingfisher become successful in their aviation adventure and
that their A380ies will serve them well...
