Auto Rotating Helicopters

Wed Jun 15, 2005 11:45 pm

I know that helicopters can "auto rotate" if there is engine failure which allows them to get down safely, how do you auto rotate? what exactly happens when you do? how effective is it?

An autorotation is basically a controlled crash though it can often be done without damage to the aircraft by using the residual power still left in the craft. Not all helis can do it IRC.

Autorotating is a basic skill taught in training, akin to a stall in an airplane.
