Tikal jets has canceled it´s GUA-SAP-MGA. service after operating for six months only. low loads are the reason

TIKAL JETS CANCELA VUELOS

Last year Tikal Jets also quit MEX after little less than 8 months, GUA is the first Latin American destination from MEX in terms of pax carried (2004).

They had big plans to start flights to MTY as well. But they shut even before exploring the market.

Sad that SAP, MGA and MEX have lost a carrier.

The reason for quitting MEX was due to the slots that they were given, the aircraft was stranded at MEX for about 4 to 5 hrs and that in the industry means a lot of money not being made. The airline said that until they could find a good slot time they'll return to MEX since it was a successful route.

MTY is very far fetched, I don't think there would be enough pax loads for that route. Unfortunately they want Central America but intra-regional travel is very small, they should focus on other destinations like BOG which was being discussed a few months ago.
nice and spacious airports in need of new airlines and flights... GUA or FRS anyone?... anyone at all?

Aer,

Market might be small, indeed. But there is a considerable (and growing) Central American community in MTY, especially Honduras, Salvadorean and Guatemalans... And that does not include Tec de Monterrey students.

But there will probably be a reduction of students at TEC in MTY, just recently, TEC announced a construction of a campus in Guatemala, according to p.r. this is as an option for Central Americans to stay near their home countries.

That´s the most obvious reaction from competition...

Although it should be noted that TA launched its low-fare strategy in October 2004, a couple of months before Tikal Jets started GUA-SAP-MGA. What I can't remember is whether the fare for this route was already as low... (I think it was)

Anyway, I wish the best for WU, hopefully they will be able to consider expanding again in a near future

Saludos

Carmen,

At the same time CM did it if my memory doesn´t fail.

I clearly remember a bitter discussion about Tikal (about 3 months ago), how great or bad it is, and somebody blaming TA for the misfortune of some smaller airlines in the area. As well as somebody saying at that time that he will be flying soon Tikal and will be also posting a "trip report". I´m still waiting for it...

It seems that what I said then, is a reality now.

Yes, they did... an interesting story there.

TA had been carefully planning this strategy for months before that. It was supposed to be strictly confidential, so the competition wouldn't be prepared to react when the time came. Well, somehow the information was filtered to CM beforehand, and thus they were able to retaliate.

(Next thing we know, Security Chief drops by our office to have a friendly talk with us... *shudder*)

From your posts, I deduct you must be not pleased to see this man come up every time TA is mentioned... Neither am I, but what can I say? You eventually get used to it.  Wink

Feliz fin de semana!
