WestJet Pulls Out Of Windsor, Ont.

Fri Jun 17, 2005 1:44 am

This is sad, as I travel to Windsor, Ontario (from YYC) all the time.

WestJet pulls out of Windsor, Ont.
Last Updated Wed, 15 Jun 2005 16:09:44 EDT
CBC News
WestJet Airlines announced several operating changes Wednesday, including the decision to pull out of Windsor, Ontario.

The Calgary-based discount airline said it will stop service to the city effective Oct. 30. WestJet has been flying to Windsor since April, 2003. WestJet will be shifting its capacity from Windsor to London and offering increased non-stop service between London and Calgary.

At the same time, the carrier said it will move its operations in Toronto from Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 on June 22.

WestJet said it will cost less to operate from Terminal 3 and there are more conveniences there and more room to accommodate the airline's expanding operations.

In addition, WestJet announced a revamped flight schedule that includes more service to U.S. destinations. The company is adding new service to Fort Myers, Fla., on Sept. 6 and to Las Vegas on Sept. 8.

WestJet shares were off 20 cents at $14.90 on the TSX.

In a way I'm not too surprised. The last three times I flew to YQG, I booked Air Canada / Air Canada Jazz, as they were MUCH MUCH cheapper. Well worth the one or two hours I had to wait in YYZ... and flying the Dash 8 is great!

I'm working on a trip report with lots of pics for that

Why can't these airlines make Windsor work? It would seem that it would make more sense to market Windsor as Detroit, after all, it is closer to downtown Detroit, Michigan, than Detroit-Wayne County Airport is.

On problem...backups for customs on the bridge and tunnel to the U.S. These can get daunting in the summertime, especially.

Your question makes a lot of sense and a lot of people are asking the same thing. YQG is so much closer that DTW to downtown detroit and they had A-124s land on it's 25-07 runway. I think the terminal itself is the problem. When Skyservice used to fly to Varadero, that airport would be so busy, and that's just one A320.
They'd have to improve the airport before anything else. It's quite pathetic if you ask me.

No reason to improve the airport when no one besides AC sticks around for more than a few months, or a year at best (amazingly WJ held out for quite a while, I thought they would quit much sooner). The management does try to market itself as a gateway to Detroit, but the border isn't what it used to be, and lack of scheduled year round destinations makes the efforts pretty pointless.

At any rate, the airport is in talks with WJ trying to persuade them to at least keep a seasonal service.

Selling Windsor as Detriot would be impossible. Unless there were some way of putting people through customs and transporting them across the border without contact with the outside world.

London makes sense, since it's more central to the region and (I believe) a larger city.

I'm sure that, when they are ready, WestJet will return to Windsor and make it work.

Elwood64151,

Yes, very true. Windsor cannot be marketed as "Easy way to Detroit". Crossing the border is not what it used to be. I remember pre 9/11, going to the border:

US Custom Officer: Hello, citizenship?
Vio: Canadian
US Custom Officer: Where are you travelling to today and for how long?
Vio: (reason, Tiger games, shopping, bars... etc)
US Custom Officer: Ok Have a nice day

in all half a minute at the most... very rarely did I get asked for ID....

Now it's more like: "Citizenship, ID, where you going? how long? why? what do you work? where do you live? have you got friends in the states? what are you bringing? Can you pull in there? Can we search your car? "

It's not what it used to be... so yeah. YQG as Gateway to Detroit... nope... won't happen.

Getting back to Westjet... that's too bad... What other airlines pulled out of there? CanJet pulled out. They used to fly there. Any other ones that you can think of? (I know Skyservice flew YQG - Varadero)

CanJet I served YQG, but not the present day CanJet. Skyservice still does YQG charters in the winter.

With WS' departure, I wonder if YQG will be come a Jazz CRJ station linking YQG to places such as YWG/YUL/YOW/YHZ?

And WJ is leaving LGA! They say b/c they can't grow anymore. I say they should shift to JFK and they can either go to T4 or go to B6 Terminal so David Neeleman could have the airline he started and the other would be the one he helped start. Although I hear Neeleman isn't friendly with WJ, he is more friendly with AC.

Something called Vista Jet or whatever used to fly here before Canjet 1, Royal used to have a presence at YQG as well, but pulled out (even before they went under AFAIK). Too bad Jetsgo didn't serve YQG for a few weeks, just for the hell of it, before disintegrating. SSV can be counted on for about half a dozen A320 flights a week during the winter months (one flight per southern destination), some seasons AC vacations brings in an A319 as well.

I didn't know that WS was based at Terminal 2 at Pearson. I thought it was still at Terminal 3. T2 is the cramped building with little room to move around.
When did they move to Terminal 2?

I know so because in 2003 I flew WS to YYZ and deplaned at the Terminal 3 gates.

For Windsor, yah if company is losing money due to poor demand, save the costs and use the planes and staff elsewhere like YXU.

If that's true, I wonder why that is?

I do believe WS is set to move back to T3, this week.

Non-stop service vs a connection at YYZ... big difference there.

A332,

Most people wouldn't mind the wait in YYZ, to save 2 hours. (remember if you cost out the return trip, you'll end up saving at least 150 dollars)
