Some Questions About US Airways

Sat Jun 18, 2005 12:06 am

Are they trustworthy? I am thinking of travelling with them this summer. I heard about the baggage losses and other bad things about US Airways last winter. How are they now? Are they bankrupt? Is it safe to check my bags? BTW, only one leg of four of my itinerary involves US Airways (PHL-DEN A319). The others are US Airways operated by United. What does that mean? Do I fly UAL planes? Will my baggage be carried by UAL planes? On my return segments, all two flights are US Airways operated by United. I am returning from SJC. Do I check into the UAL counters or US counters? How about in PHL where PHL-DEN is US Airways and DEN-SJC is UAL? I would suppose I check in at US counters and they give me the connecting ticket too. Will my mileage be UAL or US? Thanks for all the help!!!

I flew em last year all the way to LAS via PHL from LGW, and loved every min of it. Staff were great, food was very yummy, and there planes and IFE are amazing (on the 330 n e way)

Your flying on United, they must codeshare. Its like flying to MEL, ur on a BA ticket, but u may be flying QF

Again, its united, so i think ur goin to be going to the UAL check in
Where does the time go???

US Airways is certainly bankrupt, and so is United. Both are large international airlines in the world's top 15 by capacity. They know what they are doing.

Regarding Philadelphia, it's not a great airport, but hundreds more employees work there today than last winter. You should be ok.

You sould be fine on US. I have been a FF with them for well over 10 years, and have espicially been flying them more frequently in the last year. I recently have been on US for flights from ALB-PHL-MCO-PIT-ALB, ROC-PHL-MBJ-CLT-ROC, and ALB-PHL-LAS-CLT-ALB. All of the flights were fine, with the exception of my MBJ-CLT leg. The flight was late arriving to MBJ due to international security regulations. I missed my connection, but US was very very accomodating and got me home ASAP with all my luggage.
I'm very certain that you will be fine checking your baggage. I have NEVER once had my luggage misplaced by US.
About your flights with US and UAL, whatever airline the first flight is on, that will be the carrier that you will check in with. When you check in they will give you all of the appropriate boarding passes and make sure your baggage is passed from one airline to the other.

I have another US question.

Why do they have so many different suffixes, (N???AU/N???US/N???UW).

My last flight on US was in March of 2005.

Flew MIA-PHL-SYR-PHL-MIA

Planes on the mainline MIA-PHL-MIA segments were fine on the inside (737-400s). Flight Attendants were fantastic as were the pilots - very informative announcements regarding the route and points of interest along the way.

The PHL-SYR-PHL legs were great too, though it was USAirways Express and not the mainline.

The suffixes are from old carriers absorbed by USAirways, I think.

A lot of carriers run out of their main suffix. Southwest Airlines ran out of "N...SW" so they also have "N...WN" (airline code), "N...MA" (from Morris Air, which they bought) and "N...HK" (for Herb Kelleher, the former CEO and a founder of Southwest Airlines.)

Oh, and Tony - I think USAirways is still fine, as long as you avoid connecting at PHL... I will no longer connect with less than 2 hours' layover at PHL.

If it's a US flight number, operated by United, then you will indeed be on a United aircraft with a United flight crew... but you still check in at USAirways.

When it comes down to it, think about how many flights they operate per day. Yes, in the past few months they've had a few baggage problems, but it's all such a fraction of a percent if you really average it out. You'll be fine flying them and UA.
