MIA Diversions?

Sat Jun 18, 2005 8:51 am

Good day everyone,

I'm in Nassau at the moment, and was at a beach today when I saw both an AF 744 and AA A300 turning finals to NAS rwy 27 (14/32 is under construction). I'm guessing they were diverted from MIA for some reason; was it weather (around 3.30pm)? It was a great sight to see that 744 gliding in. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of them when VS inaugurates its service to NAS.

The news stations at West Palm Beach reported slow moving thunderstorms over Miami today.

I wonder why they'd divert flights today as opposed to last night. This afternoon's storm was a regular afternoon one, but last night's lasted for hours and knocked out power to many parts of the city (including mine).

My guess would be that they found a hole to stick them in yesterday. Today it looked like FLL and MIA had some severe weather.

The reason they diverted today is because there were thunderstorms today. You might have thought today's seemed "regular" but they were just as bad as the ones last night--the one that hit FLL this afternoon dropped the visibility to 1/4 mile with wind gusts to almost 61 mph.

It matters not whether you have a 50,000 foot tall storm sitting over the airport, or a 25,000 foot tall storm sitting over the airport--there's still one over the airport, and either one will mess up operations...  Wink

Wednesday evening I was at Target getting into my car when I heard an unusual sound in the sky.
Turned around and saw a Virgin 747 roaring low overhead on take-off. I literally screamed to my son in excitement "WOW Alex LOOK!!!!! It's a 747!!!!"
Some old man walking by looked at me, then at plane, then back at me like I was a crazy freak or something!
Even my 5 year old could not understand my excitement.
He looked at me as if to say ok mom, cool it, it's just an airplane. He did want to know why it had 4 engines though  Wink
You must understand TPA rarely sees a 747 much less a Virgin Atlantic 747-400. It promptly turned east and didn't gain much altitude. I am guessing it was a MCO diversion heading back over to MCO. Oh how I wish I had my camera with me. Evening sun light, low 747. Beautiful bank angles, sigh.

I believe I can fly.....

In some of the other posts the damage was a bit overstated.

The damage to E-10 was the worst. The wall at the end of the jetway where it curves 90degs twords the aircraft was riped off the jetway and landed over near E-9 (50ft away). The damage to E-8 was similer but a slightly similer extent and might be usable some time later today.

I'll update later.
